It's USA v Mexico for the New World's equivalent of the European Championship and it's on at 2 am Sunday on Eurosport UK. I've got Sky Plus, so I'm recording it. Other EPL players will be there like Villa's Eric Lichja (good left back) and Michael Bradley, Blackburn's Jermain Jones, Everton's Tim Howard and ManU's Javier Hernandez will be fighting it out for the championship of North and Central America and the Caribbean. Clint "Mom, I just shaved!" Dempsey has hit three goals in five games, but all those coming against countries one could hardly find on a map, like Canada (just kidding, eh?). He got the game winner against Panama.
You forgot Demps great partner (although not aEPL player) Landon Donovan, oh how I would love to see them paired up at the Cottage. The great think about the USA team is that they are proud to represent their country.not like the skallywags that turn out for us.
I cant help but feel salcido will be destroyed if put up against dempsey, as has been the case against the majority of wingers hes faced this season!
It's on FoxSoccer and Univision in the states, 9pmEDT/6pmPDT. As a one-time Angelina, I note with amusement that the traffic warnings are already up: http://latimesblogs.latimes.com/lanow/2011/06/rose-bowl-usa-mexico-soccer-game.html
And, of course, since the game will be played in California, it's essentially an away game for the USA. Hopefully, the USA fans will make their voices heard. I'm going for a 2-1 win for the USA.
Former Fulham man Carlos Bocanegra will be the USA captain. Mexico will also have premier league's Dos Santos. But Unfortunately Salcido might be out injured. The match may also be available for free on the Internet via the CONCACAF website. The El Tri of Mexico are the favorites, but Deuce, Landon "the El Tri Killer" Donovan, and Tim Howard have been known to pull off a miracle or two. Over here on our side of the pond, Mexico vs USA is THE rivalry. It's intense. Broken legs intense. Landon Donovan taking a piss ( literally) on the Azteca grounds in Mexico City after the match intense -- this happened a few years ago--Both teams have alot of respect and aggression toward one another.
It's a great rivalry, but neither side seems to win away. Last time we lost 5-0 in Mexico. This may sound strange, but I think US soccer owes a debt of gratitude to Mexico. Growing up, my first three coaches were English, Mexican and Mexican in that order, and I know that's been the experience of many Americans with whom I've played. It was all kick 'n' run until our Mexican friends taught us to pass. Next to the US and Germany, Mexico's the next team I root for.
I absolutely agree with you, Dempsey Revenge. The USA v Mexico is a tough rivalry, but as far as soccer culture here goes, Mexico (and the hispanic community) has definitely helped show US Soccer the way. In fact, there are several Mexican-Americans on the USA team now. And Americans playing in the Mexican premier division. Heck, when I go play pickup, the best games I find are in the hispanic communities. GOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOL, CheetahYZ!!!
I think Salcido may have a sprang. It's supposed to be a gametime decision regarding his fitness. Salcido has been spotty with Fulham, but for Mexico he's always done well. Currently, El Tri has scored 18 goals and given up only two in the tournament. Strange how players play differently between international and club teams. Only this year has Dempsey turned on the goals for the USA like he has for Fulham. Dempsey has had a great tournament. Media here says that his Gold Cup showing may result in interest from more clubs. I hope not. I understand his desire for Champion's League football and certainly couldn't be angry at him for leaving for it, but selfishly, I want him to stay at Fulham. Of course we've all said that on more than one thread. Man, interesting days are ahead. Aren't they? COYW! GO USA!
Mexico 4-2 USA After the USA went 2-0 up through Bradley and Donovan. nice flicked header by Bradley and a Dempsey through ball to Donovan for the 2nd to go 2-0 up. The USA keeper had a bit of a nightmare with 3 of the goals. Only saw Goal highlights so not sure if Salcido played.
Mexico pasted USA all over the pitch, but both teams defences were god awful and would see any PL side relegated with 100+ goals conceeded. As poor as some of the play was quality wise, it was one of the most exciting games for years, like the rose-tinted memories of the FA cup from years ago, real end-to-end stuff with barely a breather. If you didn't see it, try to find it, it's a match that would entertain anyone who likes football.
Typically poor USA performance. As soon as Cherundolo went off and that loathsome Bornstein came on, I knew we'd be in trouble. We deserved a pasting and we got one. Dempsey played OK, but looked tired throughout the tournament.
