I was in that crowd Massive. 30 thousand approx crammed into Ashton Gate. There certainly was a different kind of atmosphere then. It may be safer now but it definitely aint as good. Great pictures of the Leeds games that started it all in the 70s. Still the most memorable games i have seen in 38 years since..
I'm in the Dolman just to the side of Keith Fear's left ear as he lobbed Harvey for our goal. BRR; crowd 37,141 and for next round versus Liverpool, they managed to cram another 530 in. I was also at Elland Road for the replay. It was my late first wife's first ever football match and when Donnie Gillies scored she sat in her seat and uttered the immortal words "Has something important happened?" The 20 minutes that followed were the longest in our lives as we waited for the final whistle. Great day.
Funny how we remember such a match from all those years a go, but at the time Leeds were the best team in the world! If I remember the reply was played at a strange time as I ran home from primary school and my Dad had the radio on when we scored! A. D. did few but great signings, we have such a small squad so it was great when he added Donnie Gillies as it seemed to me in those days we only had a choice of 2 players for the number 12 shirt John Emanuel or Micky Brolly. This squad improved so much over the next 2 years and produced our promotion team, nowadays a premier league team would of snapped up our stars before the chance of going up. Those players in the 70's were 100% City, real legends.
I went to the Elland Rd replay with my Dad. When we scored he stood up and roared, and his false teeth fell out onto the hat of a bloke sitting below us. Your too right about the last 20 mins. When Johnny Giles hit the bar I thought I was going to have an accident. Then we watched in amazement as a large and disbelieving crowd left in tears. Finally my day was complete when we actually saw our heroes celebrating in a motorway service station on the way home. Gow was giving Merrick a piggy back around the foyer Fear's goal at Ashton Gate is still the most dramatic and beautiful thing I've seen at a football match -
The pass from Gerry Gow to set up Keith Fear was simply fantastic, Gerry had everything, the toughest tackler, a great passer and an eye for the goal
Remember both games, went to Elland Road, courtesy of our boss, who paid for the whole factory to go, it was an afternoon kick off, because of the power cuts at the time, no one could play floodlit football. Got headbutted on the way out by a skinhead, looked like a gorilla, but it was worth it, those were the days.
Dare i say, a world class performer. If we had a Gerry Gow at the club now we could look forward to the big time again. Sadly we do not, and as the only hope for this is our youth academy i guess we canresign ourselves to mediocrity
If we did have a Gerry Gow playing for us now I'm sure a club like Man City would snap him up....... Déjà vu
