Promotion-winning squad to return to Loftus Road in December ⦠THE QPR class of season 2003/04 will return to Loftus Road in early December, as the club celebrates the tenth anniversary of our memorable promotion from League One to the Championship. Players from the Râs 2003/04 League One squad will return to W12 when we host AFC Bournemouth on Tuesday 3rd December, for what promises to be an entertaining evening, both on and off the pitch. The Râs, of course, clinched their place back in the second tier of English football on an unforgettable afternoon at Hillsborough in May 2004, when goals from Kevin Gallen, Paul Furlong and a Chris Carr own goal clinched a 3-1 win over Sheffield Wednesday. All members of that squad have been invited to our game against the Cherries and we are pleased to announce the following players have so far confirmed their attendance: Chris Day, Lee Camp, Nick Culkin, Kevin McLeod, Gareth Ainsworth, Marcus Bean, Marc Bircham, Steve Palmer, Martin Rowlands, Kevin Gallen, Paul Furlong. Amongst other planned activities, the players will be presented to the crowd at half-time, as well as being available for autographs and photos in and around the ground. Our matchday programme will also look back on that superb season, including an exclusive feature with members of the promotion squad, as well as a detailed review of the campaign. Good marketing.... I was thinking of missing that match, but won't now.
Great idea. Some proper R's legends in that old squad. Was talking to Gino a couple of months ago in the States. I wonder if he'll come over for it. Lovely bloke, great player for us.
A fitting tribute to a team that really wore the Hoops with pride taking us out of one of our darkest periods...
Listening to the great man now on Newstalk. (See what I did there?) There's a huge difference though saying "great player for us" than simply a "great player" considering we were in League One when he was with us! In that particular team at that particular level, he was a great player for us, vital to our promotion success.
Could have had a very good career- big, strong, quick, good left foot- but pissed it away through too many pints and not enough effort. I loved that team though.
McLeod did look like he had something about him. Forgot about him. Anyone remember Dave McEwan? I was at school with him, played in the same team for 3 or 4 years. He was ok, but far from amazing, then all of a sudden, he's turning out for the hoops. Bizarre. I used to play against Quinton Fortune as well.
Vine and Agyemang were from a different team boys. They came along with the big bucks. Olly's team were bargain basement, car-boot sale jobs.
Yeah, I know, Travis. I was merely mentioning him in the same breath as "Connor McLeod of the Clan McLeod" because they were both players that failed miserably to deliver on initial promise. Freema scored for Pompey the other night, only for the game to be abandoned due to the elements. Does anybody know whether scorers are still credited with the goals for Golden Boot and other record-keeping reasons when games are abandoned under such circumcisions?
