Just retuned from trip back to the UK. Got to say, I remember why I left....god it was cold!! I managed to get the SOL for the Hull game on Boxing Day and after a fantastic start, was totally underwhelmed by the lads performance. Having said that the day out was brilliant, a few beer in the town before the game, ....and yes we managed to catch up with Wee Philie. I love being in Sunderland on match day, one of the things I miss most about living away. Two days later I made the trip to Villa Park, where I took my grandson to see his first Sunderland game. What a fantastic day it was, he was blown away by the noise and the passion of the fans and I'm sure he will remember it for a long time to come. The class act, as per the title, is Smug in Boots. What a man. Not only did he source tickets for me and my grandson, but he posted them to my daughters house, so that I could have them before the game and all this without knowing me or having any money up front. I had the awesome pleasure of meeting him and his son prior to the Villa game, We enjoyed a beer and I settled my bill. Moreover I got to meet two genuine, proud Sunderland fans whom it was my good fortune to shout the breeze with for half an hour before the game. Smug you are truly a class act and I am humbled by your generosity and good nature. Thank you for enabling me to spend one of life's big days with my grandson.....he loves the scarf by the way!! . FTM and keep the faith.
Great to see our community looking after, and being grateful for, each other. this is what a footballing family should be about, and its one of the main reasons i love my club, the supporters.
Great post. Smug I owe you an apology, I occasionally read your forum because I find it very entertaining and I had formed an opinion that you were a cantankerous, difficult person but Monkmasters post reveals what a great guy you are. I've also got a Sunderland supporting grandson (I support Saints) and he is as thrilled with the passion of your away fans as this lad was. So I think its brilliant what you did for Monkmaster. I'm sure we all remember our first game, mine was to see Stan Matthews at the Dell, I hope his grandson will remember his first game and always associate it with your generosity. Don't want to come across as too cheesy but just thought I had to write.
Thanks, glad to be of help, it was a pleasure to meet you I can't take credit for the scarf, that was a gift from my son .......... I hope your grandson's waving it at Wembley some time soon.
I would fly back to be by his side at Wembley.....would be nice for this years F.A cup final....It'll be my birthday!!!!
