In the echo today we went for him apparently in the Jan transfer window, well where is he ? unless them type of players are signed in the summer the gates will plummet.
And we are reported to have inquired about Beevers earlier, those two experienced players would undoubtedly have made a big difference, but it is what it is, and with good management at team level, we may yet achieve our goal this season without their help. Lets hope so.
Quote:"In the echo today we went for him apparently in the Jan transfer window, well where is he ? unless them type of players are signed in the summer the gates will plummet." Gates have already started to plummet, Monty987, the number of times you "are not going to the ground" or "you are not renewing your season ticket", or "thats you finished with them" No wonder if other posters took the same view, gates would definitely go down
For some reason Monty you seem to have this very strong belief that if we want a player we can have him and if we don't have him it's because we failed. Maybe the club didn't want to sell unless we paid well over his value or the player really didn't want to be here unless we paid well over his current wage. Any doubt about what you can get on this situation see Grigg!
Did that information come from Peterborough's owner, if that was the case I'd suspect that they are trying to sell him whilst he has some resale value. How long left on his contract, I wonder?
I really don't know the details, but heard it from a mate of mine who like me was enthusiastic about signing him as he certainly looked the part against us last season. Obviously went no further and we ended up with the lad from Stoke, who has had a shaky start, but hopefully will prove an asset. As we are so short on central defenders atm. The center forward position is also a worry but if Stewart was ruled out, a change of style might be the answer, but a central defender can only be replaced by another central defender imo.
I'm aware that the Peterborough owner (Macanthony?) along with Barry Fry do have a certain reputation for bigging up their players and conducting some of their transfer business in public shall we say. @clockstander As to your point in relation to centre forwards and centre half we do have the case of Dave Watson who signed as a centre forward but his preferred position was centre half. Rare I know but the thought just struck me so thought I'd post it. Funny what pops into my head sometimes
I remember Dave Watson well , it was Stokoe who moved him permanently to CB when he brought in Vic Halom , what a move that was, dread the thought of Bailey Wright up front though. Get your point about Mr Fry.
I saw an interview with Barry Fry saying we made a couple of unacceptable bids for the defender (Possibly Beevers) and then made an aceepatable bid with 15 minutes left of the window but he said the manager had gone home and they had promised the manager he wouldn't lose any other players. he never mentioned Clarke Harris mind
I would expect us to renew our interest in both of them if we fail to get promoted. Clarke-Harris would be the main replacement for Stewart and Beavers would be a great acquisition. If what MacAnthony says is not spin (and he always talked a good one when I knew him), we should have been bidding for him a lot sooner than the last 16 minutes of the window.
My mates who are Peterborough fans reckon he's been ****e this season, terrible attitude (which he's had all his career apparently) just turns it on when he feels like it. He can't be arsed the majority of the time. We've already had players like that here.
As the above two posts highlight, recruitment is best carried out with caution, as both Grigg and Maddison, in different ways, have proved.
