Freiburg remain hopeful they can keep striker Papiss Demba Cisse beyond transfer deadline day.

Blackburn, Sunderland and Fulham have all been linked with the in-demand 26-year-old this summer but failed to strike a deal.

Now Newcastle United have made a late bid to try and get him, but reports in Germany suggest that the North East club's offer was way below Freiburg's valuation of over £12million.

Newcastle were believed to be offering less than £9million and Freiburg insist that they want to keep Cisse.

Freiburg general manager Dirk Dufner told Sportinformationsdienst: "The topic of Papiss Demba Cissegetting a transfer is a closed one.

"He is to remain with us and we are purely delighted. He is a special player and we are favoured by fortune to have him under contract.

"We are looking forward to relishing this circumstance for a bit longer."

Cisse, who is contracted to Freiburg until June 2014, has made an excellent start to the new season with four goals in four games.

I am 100% sure that I have seen a compilation of footage on Youtube including Kevin Keegan saying something along the lines of "Mike and Derek would bid for a player worth £5m and they would offer £1m knowing it would get rejected, just so they can say they tried".

If this is the case, Mike Ashley should be reported to the FA for contravening rules of the Fit & Proper Owners law. He is essentially messing people around and causing upset at other clubs just to quench the thirst of the fans, who want to hear that Newcastle United are active in the market.

Whilst I respect the policy of buying young and talented players, he is only buying them for resale, nothing more. Obviously he ploughs a lot of money into NUFC but he knows fine well it is a sustainable asset, as opposed to his stock exchange based investments.

I expect Newcastle to secure a very low-key striker today and say they 'tried' to get top strikers in, when in essence they didn't try to get a striker in at all, they simply sent a ferret down a hole knowing that there was nothing inside it.
