In spanish papers and particularly one called 'Marca' Roker Report have picked up on it: Sunderland could be close to making a decisive move for Atletico Madrid's winger Cristian Rodriguez, according to a report by Spanish paper Marca. The 28-year-old Uruguayan made 20 appearances in Atletico's La Liga winning season, though 18 of those were from the bench, and after starting all four of Uruguay's games at the World Cup, he has made no secret of his desire to leave the Vicenté Calderon Stadium this summer. According to the report, Gus Poyet has been in contact about signing the player since the end of the season, and that move could be close to 'coming to fruition' with the player himself wanting to 'embark on a new adventure' with Sunderland in the Premier League and soon enough so he does not have to report to Los Colchoneros' Los Angeles de San Rafael training camp in a couple of weeks. Rodriguez himself is a left-footed left winger who can also play in the centre - as he did for Uruguay in their last 16 World Cup loss to Colombia - of a three man midfield. He would, therefore, appear a good fit with Poyet's football. Of course, whether or not there is any truth to the report is another matter entirely. Yesterday there was about an hour between USA defender Matt Besler claiming Sunderland wanted him and news that they didn't. It's not called 'silly season' for no reason. As an aside, Sunderland actually had the opportunity to sign Rodriguez last summer to replace James McClean, but Paolo Di Canio didn't want him, presumably because he wanted a right-footed player for the left wing. In other news he is also apparently nicknamed 'Cebolla'...which means 'Onion' in spanish....make of that what you will
Cracking left sided player, loves to run at people, I'd be delighted with this. Never really cracked it in Madrid, but was fantastic at Porto. Nicknamed 'the little onion', cos apparently he makes full backs cry, haha. I think I know this as it was in the commentary on FIFA a few years back.
Id disagree based on a couple of things... His goal and assist contributions over the years are nothing to be admired Also he is 28... if we were to sign him for anything near that I'd be a bit miffed
Would essentially be a £12m fee can think of a player 5 years younger, has been with us for a year and got 10 goals who i'd rather spend it on...
What the ****? I wrote Shallot and my spell checker changed it. Scrap that then or I could check the settings.
Cristian 'Cebolla' RodrÃguez wants to leave Atlético in search of more first-team football. It appears as though Gus Poyet is keen to offer him just that at Premier League outfit Sunderland. The 'Black Cats' have been showing an interest in signing the Uruguayan since the end of last season and that is where he will be playing his football next campaign if a deal can be reached. Both Atlético and the player are keen to conclude negotiations with the English club as soon as possible so that RodrÃguez does not even have to join up with Atleti for pre-season training in Segovia.
Would rather go for Callum Mcmanaman from Wigan Young, english, winger and has played under martinez so would adapt to poyet's style quickly Also has some epl experience
Like the lad, right sided though, so could be an 'as well as'. To be fair, he could be a Borini alternative, at half the cost.
Hates Newcastle players as well which is always a bonus for a Sunderland signing. He's a decent player think Rosler is doing a good job with all of that squad. Hope to see him in the top flight soon.
Yeah think they'll be very strong next season with Rosler, I think Rosler himself will go along way, just seems very 'German', seems to have evry angle covered, and despite a lack of any real personality, he's very likeable.
