Will he be the new Wes Brown?

What I mean is that he has the potential to be a top centre back but will playing at right back prevent him from achieving that potential?

I agree he is a center back and is played out of position, but injuries mean either him or Jones have to play there. Smalling will be a top quality CB for years to come once we strengthen the full back areas.

If the twins can stay fit for more than one game then he can move back to the centre, and with Vidic being injured he might get more games at CB.
Fletcher and Valencia have both played at right back, they might be a better option. But saying that, from what I saw of the game Valencia played well going forward.

One positive to take from Smalling playing at right back is he is getting game time and experience.

Hopefully he'll go back to playing CB, where he has proven that he's top class. He normally puts in a decent shift at RB. (Earned an England call up playing there). Today he was run ragged by Jarvis, and I'm sure he'll have some poor games at RB if he continues to play there.
