CHRIS HUGHTON believes "anything" is possible for Newcastle United this season - due to the unwavering levels of support at St James' Park.

The popular former Toon boss watched on from the visitors’ dugout on Sunday afternoon as his side ran United so close during the 1-0 defeat on Tyneside.

However, with the home crowd clearly sensing their side needed lifts at key stages of the game, it was the black and whites that ran out victors.

Hughton feels visiting sides will always be up against it with 50,000 Geordies giving St James’ a gladiatorial feel.

Reflecting on his first return to Newcastle since losing his job in 2010, Hughton told the Chronicle: “It was nice.

“In the aftermath of the game it was disappointment because I wanted us to get the result.

“I thought in good periods of the game we played well enough and caused enough problems to get it.

“However, it is never easy here because of the home fans.

“It was disappointing on that one to lose, but from a personal point of view it is the first time I’ve been back since I left.

“Nothing has changed. It is still a wonderful passionate stadium and one which is still a delight to be at – even if it is in the opposing dugout.

“Yet most teams are up against the 12th man and anything is possible.”
