    http://www.sundaysun.co.uk/sport/sunderland-afc/safc-news/2012/07/29/79310-31497382/?

    choice quotes:

'It was a great season for Newcastle.'

'It was a really great season. And of course that’s something that we want to emulate'

'Newcastle did exceptionally well, and that is something we should aspire to'

'What we have to aspire to is the kind of season that Newcastle had, and that should be our driving ambition'

    - would you be a bit annoyed if our manager was gushing about 5under1and like that ? Pardew has more class I'm sure ;-)

Mackems won't be happy with this. Mostly because he didn't end every sentence with '#FTM'

To be fair, I don't think he's shown a lack of class...If anything I think he's been realistic, we're Sunderland's biggest rivals in terms of geography and we qualified for European football by playing good football and spending a relatively small amount of money...If he turned round and said "I don't care what they do, some times teams get a lot of luck, they didn't play anyone etc." - THAT would show a lack of class!

    Magnanimous and realistic, fair play!

    - to be honest, that last bit was a bit tongue in cheek after the thing about visiting the ref, which really wasn't very classy at all,

I just think its great he managed to gush over us four times in one article, its beginning to look like he's getting infected by the irrational desire to do better than NUFC that sometimes stops those associated from 5under1and from seeing the bigger picture

It's only right that he is envious. We're the bigger club and they are #foreverinourshadow.

    (removes tongue from cheek)

Not very sensible from him even if it is a fair statement. He should have known from analysing the pitfalls of Bruces reign, that one of the fans pet hates was his obsession with us. Now many will have the brain to say this is not the same, but why give the more simple folk the ammo? His experience of the derby should have guided him how deep the passions run, its best to not discuss the other side.

To be fair, I highly doubt he's just come out and said this. O'Neill was probably asked about us so he's commented. It's what I hate about jounalism. You can do an interview and interpret whole arcticles to have a meaning based on incomplete paragrahs and people will believe it!

I don't really take note of quotes unless you can hear the question asked like pre/post match interviews and other TV/Radio interviews like on BBC TotalSport.

The journo's have to try and create some interest in their rather bland articles.

That's fine but people need to understand how journalism works, especially when it comes to "quotes". I mean 1 quoted** word from Kinnear and that was that end of N'Zogbia. People who have only read the papers rather than watching the video (i.e. seeing all aspects of an interview) still believe Kinnear said Insomnia

**He didn't even say Insomnia, he clearly says "En-sonne-year" then corrects himself and says "somme-bia" and then just gives up and says "Charlie" but the media went mental. Obviously N'Zogbia wanted out and used this as an excuse but you see my point

absolutely know its probably been twisted to make a story,

but, those quotes are still pretty funny and he does say it for times, and I especially like the bit about aspiring to be as good as us,

you would have thought that a manager would know better than to talk like that about their rivals though, regardless of the context,

I bet its boiling some mackem p*s

While agreeing with everything said about journos fidhign for quotes and then stringing quotes together to make something out of nothing, it was a little naive to speak about us quite so much. One acknowledgement that we had a very good season and then only talk about his own team

It doesn't matter if he's been posed a question or its been twisted. A manager with a bit of nouse just skips the question altogether, full in the knowledge how the media work. Bruce was undoubtedly guilty of getting obsessed with us but a large part of that was falling into the media traps. You've got to be a bit cuter, certainly while its early days.

There was a bit of an indication that he was beginning to suffer from "in our shadow" syndrome after the last derby. kept being quoted about it for the next couple of weeks

He can't say nice things about you without getting slagged? Can't see why, as you did have a good season last time out. I don't mind saying so, because it's true and saying otherwise is just stupid. I don't like the fact that you did, but then I don't like England's Euro performance either, but pretending it didn't happen won't change matters.

The season you went down you had a **** season, though. Even worse than ours, but 5th bottom never felt so sweet :)

Only very mild slagging of his media skills. The main emotion is quiet amusement.

He just needs to learn to sidestep. I'm sure Hatem would be happy to show him how. He was happy to show Richardson and McClean.................

I wasn't slagging him, I was laughing at him,

Are you gloating because you came 5th bottom once ?

Dear me, it's almost as funny as the tragic scousers who resort to bringing up trophy count when they don't have an answer
