Following a really interesting discussion with my Portsmouth friends on their board, I wanted to find out some views from some sensible Red and White supporters.

What is your opinion about ladies football .

Personally, I find their game rubbish. Poor standard, especially the keepers, and would rather watch the dog and duck up the local rec than watch that rubbish. They do however, have one massive advantage over watching some hairy arsed builder, in that some of them are quite fit (in the "I would" way, not they can run a lot). I was called all sorts of names ranging from dinosaur to pervert.

Is there anything wrong with thinking women's football is rubbish and anything wrong with solely watching it for the chicks?

On a wider scale it's mow pretty much established that women have every right to watch the game and do so in numbers. They are also breaking down the barriers that stood in the way of them working in the men's game. Chelsea physio is a bird and there are people like Karen Brady and that lino that Keys and Grey insulted, doing a damn fine job. I have no problem with chicks working in the men's game, I just find their game awful. I believe that it only gets any coverage at all because of political correctness and not because it's a good game.

What are your thoughts on chicks playing the beautiful game.

Well Sian Massey has proved time and time again she is well up to the job of officiating in the PL. She is better than most of the men as well.

Coverage has nothing to do with political correctness. They wouldn't show it if there wasn't demand.

Every game I've seen has been of a ****ty standard. Some people like to think saying that is sexist, but it's not really. I wouldn't watch Gosport v Redditch because the standard of football would be **** in the same way I wouldn't watch a woman's football match.

However, I do always think the officials like Sian Massey do a better job than most of their male counterparts.

There's other women's sport I would rather watch because It's more enjoyable than the men's game, ie vollyball (indoor, not beach), tennis (less aces and more rallies, although the grunting can be annoying), and there's Roller Derby where the girls wear short shorts.

I watch women's tennis more than I do men's tennis. Obviously.

There are many sports that women are well suited to play well, unfortunately football isn't one of them in my opinion, Having said that I would defend their right to play it and to be honest the amount of "coverage" it gets is miniscule compared to the wall to wall coverage of the men's game

It's not something I seek out (much like the majority of men's football) but I watched some women's football during the olympics and found the standard generally decent and the matches entertaining.

As Joe says, as long as women are interested in football there will be interest in women's football, and I see no reason why that's 'politically correct' or even a bad thing.

Exactly, this is what I told my Portsmouth friends and that was their response.

My point about TV and media coverage is the same. They wouldn't show the Red Lion against The Dog & Duck, live from The Rec, yet feel the need to show women's games. I'm all for watching women's sport on TV, Beach Volley ball, running, swimming, but draw the line at football. If it was men playing the game that badly, it wouldn't be on.

You misunderstand how television is programmed I think.

I find the vast majority of everything on television to be uninteresting to me, but it is shown because enough other people are interested. That is the case with women's football. Just accept that it is not for you and watch something else.

I expected the op to say he watched women's football for the shirt swapping at full time such was the cliched content of the post!

Not on the BBC it's not.

It's not driven by commercial considerations. Therefore they can put programmes on that nobody's really interested in, safe in the knowledge that us Taxpayers will pay for it.

Sky and ESPN may broadcast chicks football, but it's just filler, it's not going to sell many sports packages in its own right. Put it like this, if Sky stopped broadcasting it, how many subscribers would dump them, I reckon the numbers are between 0 and 0.

Unlike commercial broadcasters the BBC is required to provide for all audiences, not just the biggest ones. And, frankly, thank goodness for that.

Apart from the Olympics (where all the sports were covered in some degree) the only Women's matches i've seen on tv are The FA cup final and The World Cup every four years?, hardly a drain on the licence payers money.

My sig kinda gives away my position on this issue (btw, don't hesitate to like the page, need to break the 15 like barrier).

Must have been unfortunate then, as I saw Japan v Sweden in the Olympics (who finished 1st and 3rd in the last World Cup respectively) and it was a great display of attacking, counter-attacking, sweeping passing moves and excellent defending. It was really good fun to watch, though unfortunately Japan didn't win :(

The main issue when it comes to the quality of women's football is the lack of strength in depth which is in part due to the relatively small pool of players. As a result, the gap between the WSL and Premier League National Division is probably much greater than the gap between the Premiership and the Championship.

As for the viewing figures on TV, I've heard for WSL games they're roughly the same as they are for your average SPL fixture (which isn't bad considering it's only been going two seasons, and with the Olympics interest is bound to grow).

Tell me, how many British people are going to subscribe to ESPN because they show German football?

Chicks & Birds......nice......Lord Duckhunter, working hard for sexual equality since 1735! I'm sure there's delight in the female ranks that you'll watch them because they're fit though.....

Is Jim Davidson touring again soon!?

Women's football isn't that bad; some of the outfield players are okay, like Kelly Smith. Nonetheless the goalies are very bad.

Never watched it. What happens when the ball goes out of play and one of the ladies has to throw (!!) the ball back into play? The rule in men's football is that both feet should stay on the floor, however it is impossible for a lady to do this, as when throwing anything, one of their little legs always inadvertantly flicks up behind them. This therefore would obviously be deemed a foul. So does everyone at this point just give up and go home, tired of the repeated failed efforts to throw properly? Or do they go back to the changing rooms for the communal bath? I hope the latter, wahey!!

Just nitpicking but you've got one right here, although it was more just European football in general, not just German. ;)
