Cheltenham have completed the signing of former Wycombe and Brentford defender Alan Bennett.

The 29-year-old, a free agent since his release by the Chairboys at the end of last season, has signed a one-year contract, with the option of a second year.

The ex-Republic of Ireland international said: "After speaking to the boss on Friday, it felt like the right thing for me to do.

"I had a good offer from a club in Ireland but I felt like I wanted to stay here."

He added: "I've been lucky enough to be part of two promotions from League Two, with Wycombe and Brentford, so hopefully I can do that again."

Bennett's career began with his hometown club Cork before he was signed by Reading in January 2007.

He had loan spells at Southampton and Brentford, and eventually made a permanent move to the Bees.

He moved to Wycombe in a January 2010 loan deal, which was made permanent in the summer. His one-year deal expired last month.
