Putting the JT saga to one side...This seems to be a really intriguing topic IMO and a discussion I've had with many Chelsea fans down the years. I personally never have and never will see United or Liverpool as rivals in that sense, but younger/newer Chelsea fans probably view them as our biggest. They probably have been down the recent years for trophies but not in terms of reality. Of course it's always nice to put one over the gloryhunting Liverpool and United fans en masse at school/work etc but they aren't rivals in that sense. Most Chelsea fans wouldn't consider Fulham and QPR rivals at such despite both being more local than Spurs, West Ham and Arsenal. Leeds in the 60s and 70s was another big rival, but they seem to have faltered somewhat, same could be said of Leicester to a lesser extent. Who would you consider to be our main rivals and why?
Clubs I hate in order; 1. Spuds 2. United 3. QPR The rest I can bear until their know-nothing fans spout **** about history and what not
This is really strange, because I am sure that most Spurs fans will agree that we don't consider Chelsea to be our rivals. For most of us, you are simply not on our radar. For me, our only true rivals are Arsenal. Of course, this season in the league, United & £ity are now our rivals for the title.
Growing up in London/Essex I have always been around Manchester United fans. I grew tired of all the stick they gave me, and how smug they always were that United won nearly everything. So I grew to dislike Manchester United, and have always seen them as rivals. I guess they have always been "the team to beat" in England. EDIT - This is in my time as a Chelsea fan from 1995.
HIAG, I genuinely don't think you know what a rival is do you? I'm sure I remember you once saying Liverpool and United could no longer be rivals because Liverpool are further down in the table Chelsea and Spurs have a rivalry that stems back to the 70's and beyond. Goons are ALSO your rivals, albeit stronger rivals due to proximity
There is only a rivalry if a significant proportion of a set of fans consider there to be one. I don't know of any Spurs fan who considers Chelsea to be a serious rival of ours. Sorry, but that's just how it is. If Chelsea view Spurs as rivals, that's entirely up to them, of course.
Great logic and I agree with you, Your not our rivals and you think we're not your rivals honours shared no reason for you to be here now as its all sorted. Goodbye
Serious rivalry is always based on location and built on from that. Would say Liv and Chelsea have only been rivals in the past in terms of competitions. Overall though I couldn't care less if you won the league but I die a bit inside when scum United win. Wonder if rivalries fade if teams move leagues? Always seems that Leeds view United as rivals more than vice versa, maybe holding on to the past who knows
