  1. Chelsea will make a final bid for Tottenham midfielder Luka Modric. The Daily Star says they are set to make a final £30m offer for Modric and will tell Tottenham: Take it or leave it.

Chelsea are refusing to give up their chase for the Croatian play-maker, despite Spurs’ insistence Modric is not for sale. Chelsea have already bid £22m and £27m for the 25-year-old,who has made it clear he wants to leave White Hart Lane. Spurs chairman Daniel Levy is believed to be holding out for £35m.

New Chelsea boss Andre Villas-Boas is a big fan of Modric and owner Roman Abramovich is also keen, believing he could provide the chances for £50m flop Fernando Torres.

Final offer my arse. I expect the final day to be D-Day when a massive offer will come in.

Just hope we aren't left with loads of money but no quality replacement.

I should think the deal is already agreed, but won't be announced until the last day so as not to put the wind up the likes of Bale. I'm sure Levy and co have a replacement already lined up too.

Ditto. If the Daily Star told me it was Thursday, I'd get a calendar, and double check it.

Indeed. Pity the options were so limited though.

Chelsea are ready to make a £30m "take it or leave it" offer for Luka Modric, which inevitably means they will be linked with a £35m bid this time next week. And having spun the Rolodex again only to come up with zippo, the Blues are going to redial Anderlecht's number and yell, "£20m for Romelu Lukaku! Talk to me" down the line

This note from the Guardian is closer to the truth.

    Leave it.

If Roman (or, heaven forbid, Villas-Boas) want a player to load the bullets for Torres, they won't be getting any favours from a club who hopes Torres continues to be a flop, as that would free up a spot in the Champion's League spaces.

Yes you should. At least once in a while :p

It's a colloquialism oft used in the English language.

Kranjcar and Modric are both Croatian but not the same sort of player.

Both Croatian, eh? thanks for the info

I found that when Kranjcar deputised for Modric (when he broke his leg) we played better and he chipped in with a fair few goals too. I'd even go so far as to say that he was a huge factor in us getting 4th that year. His continual omission last season probably cost us 8-9 goals. Goals that could have turned many of those draws into victories.

Paul Scholes believes wantaway Tottenham midfielder Luka Modric would be a worthy signing at Manchester United.

United chief David Gill has revealed United are looking to bring in one more new face this summer, with a creative midfielder strongly rumoured to be on their wishlist following Scholes' retirement at the end of last season.

Modric, Inter Milan ace Wesley Sneijder and Arsenal midfielder Samir Nasri are the names that have been most heavily linked with a move to the Premier League champions.

And while Scholes feels any one of the three players would be a welcome addition at Old Trafford, the 36-year-old admits Croatia international Modric has particularly caught his eye.

"The ones who have been linked all look like they are capable of playing for United," he told Manchester Evening News.

"The three linked the most with United are all great top players. Of the three Modric, when we've played against him, has been the one I have been most impressed with.

"Whenever we played Tottenham, he was the one who stood out."

He added: "But there are no guarantees. You could sign Sneijder for £35-40m and it might not work out. He went to Real Madrid and it didn't quite work out for him there, so you just don't know."

The future of Modric remains uncertain, with Spurs maintaining he will not be sold at any price after refusing him a move to London rivals Chelsea.
