http://www.bbc.co.uk/sport/football/43410170 At a cost of over one BILLION pounds, Stamford Bridge will be redeveloped into a 60,000 capacity stadium. The Premier League Champions will play at Wembley for over FOUR YEARS whilst the building work is completed. Got to be a bargain at that price?
FA must be rubbing their hands in glee at all the money they're raking in to cover the cost of the overspend Might see if I can get it for our annual 5 a side completion at work
I suppose so, although I'm not sure how the 'global brand' of Chelski is doing these days. You'd imagine that Mr Abramovich will part-fund the building work, but not entirely.
Wonder who will pick up the Wembley tab after Chelsea. Anyone else get the feeling Wembley means absolutely **** all to anyone these days? Chelsea get to an FA cup final in that period and they're pretty much playing at home.
Totally agree with this. Arsenal used Wembley a few years back while the Emirates was being built. Tottenham are the current lodgers and now there's Chelsea to come next. Yep. Wembley has totally lost it's prestige. I always thought it was poor to have the FA Cup Semi-Finals at Wembley also.
This.used to be the time getting to play at Wembley was the highlight of a players career, now it's lost it's mystic mores the pity
Chelsea, arguably the most to blame for state of moneyball today, who regularly abuse FA shortfalls like the loan system, will play there for four years. If I was at the FA, I'd say "**** off". Of course those spineless ****ers won't. Wembley's representative of the FA, it's there out of sympathy rather than necessity. Chelsea will then complete the set for big clubs with a better ground than the National side.
I tend to think that Wembley needs to have all this activity to pay for itself. I can't recall the final cost of the project, but seem to remember news reports of it going horribly over-budget.
Agreed - while i think playing all the games at Wembley sort of devalues it as a national stadium it's a great way of raising income. It cost UKP800million in 2007 which is a lot of money for a few games a year. Not sure how much Tottenham have paid to use it but probably both parties are benefitting with the increased revenue from Chinese tourists helping Spurs achieve higher turnover. As Wembley is run by a private company (FA) they will have presumably got a good(fair) rental price for it. What the government did with the Olympic stadium was wrong - just so they weren't left with a white elephant they rent it to West Ham on the cheap, giving West Ham a potentially unfair advantage over other teams.
Arsenal just stayed at Highbury until The Emirates was being built. Spurs will more than likely make the FA Cup semi-final this year. The whole point of using Wembley for semi's is that it's neutral
https://www.telegraph.co.uk/footbal...ons-league-nightmare-for-arsenal-says-arsene/ Arsenal played at Wembley in 1998 & 1999 in the Champions League.
They didn't move to the Emirates until 2006. Anyway you're right, it takes the shine off it either way.
