Charlton Athletic v Barnsley Tuesday 15th April 2014 7:45pm Kick-Off Referee: Iain Williamson (Berkshire) And so we come to the third of our matches in hand over our fellow relegation strugglers and tonight Gents⦠itâs a big one, last weekâs win over Yeovil was important and I stressed in the pre-match preview that it could be one of those games that will shape our History, well we won that one, we got the three points and now we move on to an even bigger match, lose and all the good work achieved from the wins against Nottingham Forest, Leeds United and Yeovil Town will have been for nothing whilst if Charlton can win theyâll take a huge step towards survival and move not only four points clear of Millwall (who occupy the final relegation spot) but theyâll also put two other clubs (Blackpool and Doncaster Rovers) between us and that trap door â Unfortunately this is football weâre talking about and before we can dream of three points weâve got do the business against bottom side Barnsley. A match scheduled for the beginning of January this was perhaps the worst of all the postponements at the Valley this season⦠with fans of both sides on the way to the Ground, the referee took the decision to only cancel the match hours prior to kick-off, a decision which involved Charlton taking flak from all corners seeing the decision could have been averted. In terms of reunions at the Valley tonight the only real stand out player has to be Martin Craine (Defender) who spent time on loan at the Addicks in 2009 whilst Goalkeeper; Ben Alnwick would have been up against his old side had he remained at the club after January. 17.08.2013 â Barnsley 2-2 Charlton Athletic Just the second trip on the road this season saw Charlton bounce back to draw with Barnsley after going 2-0 down (both goals from Chris OâGrady)⦠Jordan Cousins was brought at Half-Time to begin his Charlton League career and a first goal followed on 64-minutes⦠Simon Church then grabbed the decisive equaliser just eight minutes later with the points shared between the two sides that day. Last Home Win over Barnsley Of course nobody will forget the 6-0 result up at Oakwell last season (especially those who travelled) and ironically that score line happened this week last year so a bit of the same for Charlton fans this season certainly wouldnât go amiss⦠Unfortunately the Tykes are a bit of a bogie side at the Valley for Charlton and have come away victorious on the last two occasions (winning 1-0 last season and 3-1 in 2009)⦠The Addicks last beat Barnsley at Home in 1999 (3-1) with a hat-trick from Clive Mendonca. Barnsley the Stats⦠24th position and currently in last place on Goal Difference is how it reads for Barnsley fans at the moment⦠they sit on 36-points joint level with Yeovil Town (having played a game less) with a Goal Difference (which could be a huge factor yet this season) of minus 29. On the road this season Barnsley have only won three matches (against Brighton, Reading and Yeovil) whilst four matches have been drawn and thirteen matches have ended in defeat⦠Only once have they kept a clean-sheet away from home coming in the 0-0 draw with Leeds United whilst Barnsley have failed to score on the road on 11 occasions, their biggest away win of the season so far was a 4-1 win over fellow strugglers Yeovil whilst their biggest away defeat was a 5-0 defeat at Huddersfield Town In terms of goals Barnsley have scored 18 times with the majority of those coming between 60 and 75-minutes (23%)⦠35 goals have been conceded on the road⦠Chris OâGrady will certainly be the man to watch in tonightâs match having scored 13 times whilst Polish Striker Tomas Cywka has four goals with Hull City loanee; Nick Proschwitz on three goals. Charlton Team News The biggest news coming out of the last game for Charlton was the return of Chris Solly who managed to survive 30-minutes at the end of the Brighton game, whether that appearance was nothing more than a morale booster for the fans will remain to be seen although he wasnât in action for the U21s in their 2-1 victory over Swansea City⦠Also missing from that line-up was Piotr Parzyszek who could be injured yet could also be on the bench this evening Marvin Sordell could appear this evening seeing he is ineligible against parent club Bolton Wanderers (whom the Addicks face on Friday) whilst Joe Pigott and Loic Nego look set to miss out as they were part of that U21 squad yesterday afternoon (although Davide Petrucci wasnât so expect to see him return this evening) Possible Side to Face Barnsley Hamer Solly â Morrison â Dervite â Wiggins Cousins â Poyet Wilson â Ajdarevic â Jackson Sordell *Highly doubtful that Chris Solly will be starting but it looks a great side Substitutes Bench Thuram â Fox â Wood â Petrucci â Harriott â Ghoochanneijad â Parzyszek A4Lâs Prediction: 6-0 (Sordell (3), Parzyszek, Ghoochanneijad, Jackson) JUST KIDDING A4Lâs Prediction: 2-0 (Jackson, Dervite)
Tricky - their recent away form has been good, which included a thrashing of fellow strugglers, Yeovil. Chris O'Grady has been a handful from the Sheffield Wednesday fixtures, and Morro has struggled with him in the past. I think Barnsley will get on the scoresheet, which does concern me. I think we will break the Saturday lose/Tuesday win streak and predict a draw - possibly by the same scoreline as the reverse fixture. 2-2 (Sordell, Cousins)
Would love Polish Pete to make an appearance. 3-1 to us, they'll go 1-0 up and then Polish Pete comes on and saves the day Seriously, don't see Solly playing sadly, but would love if he does at it would allow Wilson to get attacking at RM. Not a big fan or Sordell but apparently played well against Yeovil so will give him a chance again... we'll forget about Brighton as no one had a good game. I'm home from uni for this so going to see it... COYR
Back from dreamland... I see Wilson starting @ Right-Back... Reza ahead of him and Solly MAYBE on the bench
Have to work tonight unfortunately so won't be there, flashscores will keep me updated, back for Bolton. 2-1 win, almost ensuring safety, Dervite and Obika.
win tonight and Millwall won't catch you. It's going to be Donny or wall going down and I can't see wall beating Donny on Monday. #celebration. Good luck. I have money on you.
Evening all Charlton: Hamer, Solly, Wiggins, Wood, Dervite; Harriott, Cousins, Poyet, Jackson, Obika; Sordell Subs: Thuram-Ulien, Hughes, Morrison, Wilson, Fox, Ajdarevic, Ghoochannnejhad Barnsley: Steele, Kennedy, McLaughlin, M'voto, Cranie, Jennings, Dawson, Lawrence, Etuhu, O'Grady, Cywka Subs: Turner, Woods, Hassell, Mellis, McCourt, Proschwitz, Hunt So the big news is that Solly starts! The Asteroid drops to the bench, as does Wilson, while Harriott comes in. Morrison is only on the bench (dropped?) as Wood and Dervite start in central defence. It looks like Obika will start out wide right, with Sordell up front on his own. COYA!
Morrison and Wilson are rested, they have played a lot of games recently. With games on Friday and Monday it will require a bit of rotation.
Hmm. I'm not sure how I feel after seeing the line up. Only just leaving work, so another Tuesday game I'm forced to miss.
Morrison and Wilson dropped to the bench No Spongebob Silly starts Barnsley have got fewer than 500 here
Evening Captain my old mate. Will try to post during game CAFC wifi being trialled tonight free of charge in the Covered End
