The original cat couldn't still be alive after all this time. They've done the old switcheroo like they used to do on Blue Peter when one of the pets died. There's also a rumour that they had to replace 'Valerie Singleton' a couple of times. Fun fact: Valerie Singleton never married. That's for all you nominative determinism fans out there.
