Actually I figure he would be better off at United. Fergie has a habit of making good use of more limited players, either getting them to improve to United's standards (Fletcher, Park, O'Shea) or at least using them at the right time to give the rest a rest (Brown, Gibson).
You're missing the point somewhat. We were rumoured to be signing him, by that as an addition/imprvement to our sqaud. He's hardly the class we're looking for to breach the gulf in class between us and Barca. Barca are clearly not in fear of Carrick but Adam wouldn't be any improvement on Carrick. He'll give Gerrard a run for his money though!!
Surely of all supporters, Man Utd ones should understand by now that you don't need world class players in every position, just players that compliment the other players in the team, just like Carrick does. And a Charlie Adam corner kick could be the difference between beating Barca and losing to them.
