SHANE FERGUSON has been promoted to Newcastle United’s first-team dressing room and told to make a name for himself by Alan Pardew.

United have missed out on the signing of full-back Neil Taylor after the Welsh international’s move to Tyneside fell through and he signed a four-year deal with the Swans.
However, the emphasis now turns to the promising Ferguson for United fans.
The Irish left-back – who will start against Darlington tonight with Jose Enrique not set to figure – has cut a toned and stockier figure on his return to training since the Magpies’ summer break, and admits he is raring to go.
Fergie is looking forward to the challenge of pushing Enrique, but knows that, should the Spaniard be sold, he is in the box seat in the left-back stakes.
Ferguson – who will be on the plane for the trip to America – told the Chronicle: “I have moved into the first-team changing room.
“It is good to start the season there, and I am just looking forward to the season ahead. I just have to keep impressing. The Darlington game should be good. I am looking forward to getting back in the swing of things.”

Ferguson now feels the trip to America can help him pave a way to first-team fortune and said: “There will be a couple of other young lads going to America too, and we will try our hardest to be in the squad for the start of the season.
“The manager has said we are going there to win. It is good to be back, and hopefully I can keep pushing on again.”

Ferguson, who only turned 19 three days ago, says there is a feel-good factor around the squad at the moment and is looking forward to linking up with new signings such as Yohan Cabaye, Demba Ba and Sylvain Marveaux.

    Fergie added.
“Now it is down to the business of football and I cannot wait to get going.
All the new lads have settled in well and they are good additions to the squad.”

Shows just how highly he is valued at the club.
Bright, bright future ahead for Shane!

This article title is misleading, I was expecting Carol Smillie and 'Handy' Andy Kane.

Good that he's beefed up, I always thought he was a bit lightweight to be a LB.

This is brilliant, I absolutely can't wait to see more of Ferguson and hope he is featured often in the new season. Considering ordering the shirt with his name and (new?) number on the back once the season starts.

Did anyone else think this was going to be about Carol Smillie?

Edit: Just seen Captain Colly's post so it wasn't just me. :)

Playing LB just means he'll skin a few more players on his way up the pitch. Really though we have so many midfielders now that he's probably been told to take the LB position if he wants first team football. So he's beefed himself up and will still get forward a lot with whoever takes left wing. I do agree though somebody with his flair on the ball should be attacking more.
