I used to ref Sunday league games, but rising levels of aggression (possibly falling levels of fitness) forced me out. If there was an incident on MOTD where players had a go at the ref, it was almost always played out again on the Sunday. IMO, attitudes need to change towards the ref.
Is this really a new thing? I keep hearing that but my whole life people have yelled and done **** to refs/umpires in basically every sport I have ever witnessed or participated in. I once got ejected for trying to hit the 2nd base umpire with my catchers mask after he blew 2 calls in a game. He ducked and it missed him. We used to purposefully call a pitch from the pitcher that was aimed at the umps mask and the catcher would miss the ball on purpose if an umpire was making bad calls. My whole sports career growing up coaches got tossed, fans got tossed etc. It seems to me that you hear stuff like this but in reality it is something that has always been there. Haven't we all done things to players on the other team? Broke bones, gave concussions etc? You put people out on any field together there will be repercussions. A ref is part of any game and there will always be incidents towards them. No respect campaign is going to take away the massive amounts of testosterone and adrenaline that is pumping through your veins when you are a teenager. Its all just as silly as the no fighting campaigns that they are always tossing out. Racism is a separate issue but sports is inherently tied to violence. It is an outlet for aggression and no one is going to completely eliminate one from the other.
Refs need to stop being ****s. Actually thinking about it they haven't been bad this season so far. They were **** in the Championship though.
Why should people's attitudes towards Ref's change? They make the most important decisions in a game, and are completely unaccountable and untouchable. You can't even critisise them, even if they've made the worst howler imaginable. That needs to change first. I agree with PLT too, so far I thought our games have seen some good quality refereeing, much better than some of the ****e we endured last season.
