Just a quick observation. From the time I started watching Leicester City to very recently, the cry from City fans has always been; "spend some £^%&ing money!" Now we are in a position to spend some money, we are being linked with 'big name' players and we seem able to outspend lower Premier League clubs on wages... and people are outraged at the cash we might splash! So, do we just like a moan...or are their more worthy reasons for our sudden financial restraint?
I think we want cash invested - every club does - but we want it carefully spent. Modern football is littered with clubs who've over spent and are now witnessing the consequences. We also want money to be spent on players who will come and who actually want to play for the clubs. There's nothing wrong with having big name players as long as they still work hard and play for the club not their pay-cheque. When you have financial backing, you will always be a target for mercenaries and we are aware (and I hope Sven is too) of bringing the right people to the club. We mus also make sure we're not held to ransom by other clubs who know we've got more money to spend now. So in summary; Yes we want spending, but we want SENSIBLE spending and that's the key.
I support Greatness - Look what Peter Taylor did - He spent a fortune but because it was spent badly it sent us into free-fall.
These are mainly other fans who are jealous of our finantial situation, i don't think Leiceser fans care how much the owners spend, as long as we get to the prem next year. Problem is, now we have cash, we are looking to sign players that are more likely to end up at lower prem league clubs. Like Given, Westwood, Bougherra etc, who, if have the choice between us and .. say .. QPR/Norwich/Wigan/Fulham ... then we are just going to be wasting time. yes we can offer maybe same-to-better wages, but if you get a choice between a bigger paycheque and the premeir league ...
There are definately some players who'd go for the paycheque, although I don't think we need those players at our club.
Yeah I remember the Taylor spending spree and the spiral into administration that followed. But I was also frustrated when O'Neill had built a genuine top 10 side that there was not the finances to push on...as was O'Neill. Also...if Yakubu costs £50k a week to score every other game then would that be worth it? If it got us promoted then it would, if not then he would be a huge expense for a Championship team. And that is the gamble which Sven has to decide to take. If we paid Yakubu £50 a week then that is £2.5 million a year. It seems a better gamble than £5.5 million for Akinbeyi to me but one I suspect Sven won't take. I totally take people's point about us chasing players more likely to end up in the Prem. What if they all choose the Prem? Does that leave us picking over dross that no-one else wanted? We definitely do need to strengthen. I think my position is that the new owners will decide how much they want to spend...and we are totally at their mercy to how they will react if it doesn't go to plan. In this case, we might as well enjoy being a club with money to spend. I've spent enough years criticising other clubs for 'buying' success, in other word being jealous! This might be our opportunity to push on, be in the Prem for a generation and maybe add some more silverware. It has worked for more clubs than it has damaged. So splash the cash Top and Sven. There will be no complaints from me...but please don't leave us in the lurch when you are done with us!!!
It is great that we are now fully owned and financed by Top and co but I really hope that they can find a way of putting this club on a firm financial footing that can actually make a profit not a loss. There are far too many clubs that are in dire straits due to poor financial plans, we need to be stable for a while and hopefully us getting to the Prem this season will go some way to achieving this !!!!!
