4-4-2 does not work with this team. We don't have the luxury to just to block defend and then immediately have counter ability. Not from 4-4-2, we don't. We MUST go to 4-3-1-2. That is our solution to have outlets up the middle with overlaps from the sides for diagonal balls. All that 4-4-2 is doing for us is to block ourselves from getting into space for those diagonal balls for vertical runs. We need to take back the midfield vertically, and not horizontally, into space and not right to feet; and that is why even though we wanted to pass the ball up, we had nothing, so we tried to force-pass sideways and we gave up the ball (SWP, Barton in particular. SWP was nearly caught again too close to the area with no outlets). We need the 2 middle holders in the 4-3-1-2 to provide the outlets from the back to get to them, and in turn to provide balls to the strikers into space, not passing to feet.
Didn't get one bit of that Yappy. forget the formation, its the standard of players in the formation that matter!
What the f**k is wrong with everyone this evening, to be honest, knowing the team we were putting out I was expecting a good hiding today. That was the last time that will play together, I think we will be looking at 5 new faces to that team in time for Wolves! so chins up! come on Urrrrrrrrrsss!
It was about the best team he could pick! And yet we seemed to give up when we went a goal down. Don't know why MH didn't just put out a reserve team if understanderbly he didn't want the distraction of the Cup..
We'd only be able to play it if we brought in one or two more CM's as we only have 3 at the moment so no spares. Then again if we do bring in more quality who's to say we couldnt pull off 4-4-2 anyway. Sorry Yapp a non-starter for me.
People saying the team for Wolves will be vastly different are wrong. We wont bring in that many more. 2 max by the sounds of it. Even so, 4-2-3-1 is the formation we played under NW, which failed us. MH plays 4-4-2 and seems to have made us much harder to beat, and worked well v Wigan. Lets face it, Chelsea have one player worth more than our whole squad, so we didnt do that badly tbh.
We cant have Barton on his own there imo. Someone like Diakite sounds like he would be suited to that role. I dont think we should write off 4-4-2 just because of today though.
I apologize. Formation matters a lot, in my opinion. As far as I can see it, yes even though the opponent does its thing whatever its game plan it, we still need to be able to manoeuvre back up the field quickly with outlets, which we do not set up quickly enough as we have too many filling the width at the back when defending.
No, I mean 4-3-1-2. 4-2-3-1 will make you sit back too much at the back, and won't be enough to force a move up into the opponents' half quickly enough. It's probably good to clog up the back, but not for attacking. With 4-3-1-2, you have 1 central midfielder playing as somewhat of a "Sweeper" in front of the back 4, then you can have the 2 as wings beside him, with the 1 forward/holder behind the 2 strikers. And I mean Strikers who will be all the way up, criss-crossing, with the 1 holder providing. With the Sweeper behind him, they can pull strings from the middle.
That's not bad! But I still think we need 2 strikers. I really think our back 4 are doing a fairly solid job. I was impressed with One Size in the first half, he lost energy in the 2nd from not playing first team matches enough this season, but he did very well in the 1st half. We really blocked Chelski well in the 1st half, Paddy really didn't have much to do. But immediately in front of the defenders is where we got tangled. And that is because we didn't move fast enough up to be able to provide places to pass.
