Now that Sparky has been given his P45 and it looks like he will be replaced by Harry I was just wondering what people thought about our chances of staying up now. Have they improved considerably this morning? I think our matches between now and Christmas are vital and the gap of 5 points between us and reading in 17th must be closed before Santa arrives. What are your thoughts? Do we have a good chance now?
Still slim to none. It seems expectation levels are rising already, which is never a good thing. Feet on the ground and be realistic. It's a tough task for any manager.
Our chances of staying up have greatly improved with this unexpected news. I'll settle for 17th again.
We have a better chance now no doubt. Same bunch of players though but I expect Harry to get more out of them.
I will be very interested to see what contract he gets. 6 months, 18 months? Bet ya Harry was hoping for a bigger job than us!
I think I optimistically said 16th before the season started, but have felt 20th has looked odds on the last few weeks. Now I have some reason to be optimistic again - 16th is just about still possible.
Here's the maths: We have 26 games left, 2 of which are tough away games before 'Arry has even got his feet under the desk That's a maximum of 78 points available (although more realistically 75 given the above) Let's set a safety target of 40. We have 4. We need at least another 36. 36 = 12 wins Discounting tomorrow, that means we need to win half of our remaining games to stay up. Redknapp will become a legend if he can get us out this mess. Personally I think it is unlikely.
37 points was good enough last year. After tomorrow, we will have 25 games left. We don't need to win 12 or half of them. To get to 40 points, we could win 9, draw 9 and lose 7. Basically, we have to win more than we lose with some draws thrown in.
It mightn't take that amount at all AAGH. Your calculations are very misleading. The game, with all its variables, can't simply be reduced to mathematical equations. I could easily counter that with "we're only a couple of wins from getting out of the drop zone". Lies, damn lies..............
Whichever permutation of results you choose it's going to need something herculean to get us out of this mess. A third of the season gone and still no win, is not a good basis for Harry [assuming it's him] to work from. It's still possible, so we'll just have to wait and see. It will be interesting come the transfer window, after Fernandez has reportedly stated there won't be wholesale changes in January. I would assume though that Harry would want some assurances that funds would be available if necessary.
