With another season nearly upon us and the Holy Grail ever further away, how do we enjoy it, or like spoilt children stick 2 fingers up at it. Realistically the teams above us are in another stratosphere and our owner/board do not have the will or financial commitment to provide a competitive platform . So with next to little chance of day in the sun, what do we do ? A bit on the side. Should we have passion for another. Maybe Real Madrid as we have a very special relationship, as brothers in arms . We have provided them with our finest and in return provided Arse with a world class player. This may be the obvious choice for many. For me there Franco Fascist legacy sort of leaves me with a sour taste . I have a soft spot for Barcelona , a tradition of good football, a peoples team, Some would say they have the spirit of our own original "Spurs Way" which sadly our swashbuckling days look like from another century. Blimey silly me they were. I just don't know what to do, Bayern but there German , Psg a sort of neo Viagra club like our lovable City/chavs. The English clubs I have no interest as I am not a nationalist , and with there core fan bases in China it is very hard to find any empathy. I am in a pickle . A realistic , no expectations, Sid on a donkey, on a Beano in Margate, The Jewel of the Kentish Rivera .
I'll be "supporting" Ajax, not that they ever really stand a chance but Ajax is the only other team who I've actually gone to watch... I'll also wish Atleti wll, just purely because they gained mine and I'm sure a lot of others respect for breaking that Barca/ Real stronghold of La Liga.
"Spurs 2" (eg, Real) are bottom of my list of teams to support. Good call on Ajax SoS, i think i'll join you. The Spurs of Holland (they're renowned for being Jewish too i believe?)
Atletico Madrid and Dortmund are my "neutral selections" . Mainly for the way they maintain their strength in the face of asset-stripping, and far lesser finances than their domestic rivals.
Dortmund have been my favourite CL team for some time, first was when they had the team which won the trophy in 1997, Sammer the classy sweeper and Paul Lambert showing not all Scottish players from the SPL are hopeless
I remain a steadfast Chicago Cubs fan. They remind me that the half century since Spurs won the league is a mere eye blink. And I'm always a big fan of Whoever-Arsenal-Chelsea-West-Ham-Real-Bayern-and-maybe-Pool-if-Pool-are-doing-well-are-playing.
Great post Sidney, I know we don't often agree on Spurs but I'm sure we would agree about almost everything else. I support APOEL of Cyprus because they are small and the competition is BIG but who gives a **** really!
Great post... I simply hope for 1) some good football 2) that the best team wins it I enjoy it cos 1) unlike the premier League it ain't stressful cos none of it affects us 2 )the goons seem to implode in the last 16 and they always seems surprised and stressed by it
Whoever I pick at the start of the CL I'll support. Picked the last 2 in a row, I really should start putting money on it.
Some good calls . I like the idea of Ajax but for once in my life it would be nice to root for somebody who has a chance of winning. Life can not be only about sadomasochism . I must receive pleasure from the beautiful game and mid week in the gloom of a cold damp rural winter get uplifting joy. 1ST choice, anybody playing ARSE/CHAVS 2ND choice , Barca , I have never been glory boy but why not. Saying that the only complete fulfilment would be Spurs to win something but I can't part the red sea.
