Making the right noises, perhaps just to keep Morgan here. Come on son, just another five years, then you can go where you like!
A reaffirmation of the ambition. This isn't making the right noises, it's saying to supporters and football people alike that this is where Southampton are detemined to go. It doesn't matter whether Morgan Schneiderlin or Nat Clyne plays for the club or not.
CL in 5 years...Les Reed lacks ambition. I am expecting the title in three I realise now that Les has been our secret weapon for the last few years. Keep up the good work.
True but I'd suggest we wouldn't get a replacement anywhere near his level. Quite possibly one that could develop to his level but then the problem of keeping hold of him when he reaches that level will be repeated.
You're merely citing the perennial problem of the smaller club trying to keep hold of its stars. This is why the establishment of Saints as a top6 club is necessary. To attract players and get them to stay so that the push upward can be made and sustained.
I can see the day when Saints are big enough that only a few PL clubs would tempt players for other than financial reasons. And remember that those few teams wouldn't necessarily want our players...so I'm not expecting to annually lose our top players. I would say that we could be a Spurs or Liverpool, but that also smacks of lack of ambition
I'd say we are at that stage. Gone are the days of losing players to Newcastle, Villa, Everton and so on. When we lose someone these days, it's to United/Arsenal/Liverpool (long-term powerhouses on and off the field) and for big money.
I think we need to make the Champions League within five years. Can't have the Cherries overtaking us
I completely agree with that, and the higher Saints go the fewer PL clubs there will be to tempt players away. But even when they are tempted away, it is Saints job to make sure the buying club pays top dollar. And then Saints go out and purchase an equal player for half the money.
