So we shall no longer be in pot 1 from next season, with the top seeds being the champions of the top 7 ranked leagues, and the Champions League winners. Makes more sense, and should make things much much much more interesting from now on.
Would liven up the group stages for me. Apart from maybe last year, our group is normally always a snore fest.
Yeah much more interesting - because we never usually have difficult groups with champ league winners, finalists and national champs in there... Though i suppose this way we could get Benfica in our group as top seed or cska Moscow and then have ac milan as 3rd seeds. Though being Arsenal, of course well get barce, dortumnd and ajax...
City as per usual are incapable of doing anything without a massive hand out. Change something thats been fine for years to suit a tiny insignificant club with no fans amd less history worth talking about. If city were englands highest seed in europe, we may aswell scrap the thing entirely.
To be honest the rule does make sense and should've been done before, it is called the Champions League after all, so makes sense for the champions to be seeded, plus makes the competition more exciting, many times the group stages are a formality and some of the aura of the UCL goes missing.
The group stages will still be a formality though. Only thr strongest pot will be pot 2 rather than pot one. Some of the best games in the champions leagur have been in the group stages. Very few, if any at all actually happen later on. By then everyone's gone defensive and play not to lose. The only way to make it more exciting is to offer financial incentives related to performance. Top scorers, biggesr win margin, most average possession, most attempts etc etc. Its unlikely to happen but when so much monet is on the line in the knockout stages, clubs are afraid to go all out. Making things easier for city wont change that.
