Seems sorted. MARTIN OâNEILL intends to use both new signing Carlos Cuellar and deputy skipper John OâShea primarily at centre-half this season. Bosman arrival Cuellar was used equally at right-back and centre-back by OâNeill during their time together at Aston Villa, while OâShea started more games at full-back than in the heart of defence for Sunderland last season. But the duo are centre-halves by trade â Cuellar making his name there at Rangers before his £8million to Villa Park and OâShea looking far more assured in the middle for the Black Cats after his £5m move from Manchester United 12 months ago. With the pair now in their 30s too, OâNeill has confirmed that he wants to utilise them in their strongest positions. OâNeill said: âCarlosâ best position is at centre-back. âHe has played at right-back for me, more times than either he or I would have wanted and did it really finely. âBut Carlos has a number of limitations in that full-back position. âI probably see John OâShea as a centre-half too. I think heâs more comfortable in that position.â Cuellarâs arrival left Sunderland with six first-team centre-halves at OâNeillâs disposal, before the Black Cats boss allowed Michael Turner to join Norwich City last week. Turnerâs departure has boosted the chances of both Titus Bramble and Matt Kilgallon remaining at the Stadium of Light, with each having just 12 months remaining on their Sunderland contracts. Kilgallon insists he was said to see Turner leave, but admits OâNeillâs capture of Cuellar has ramped up the competition for starting spots. âWeâre quite strong at centre-half,â said Kilgallon. âTina was a great player and I got on with him really well so Iâm sad to see him go. âIâve played with him quite a few times. Heâs a good defender and heâll do really well at Norwich. âCarlos has got the experience from his time at Villa, seems a great lad and itâs good to have him on board.â Kilgallon is also confident that OâNeill can land the required signings in the next fortnight, with Cuellar the sole arrival on Wearside so far this summer. The 28-year-old added: âIâm sure the gaffer knows what heâs doing. Iâm sure thereâll be a few more in before the start of the season. âI donât think any teams have done a lot, QPR maybe, but thatâs about it.â
i asked carlos the outher day on twitter where he wanted to play and he said centre ... interesting because everyone assumed he was here for RB but thats not what he wants to do.... i think it means we will be signing anouther RB
I think a back 4 of Bardsley, O'Shea, Cuellar and Olsson would be a very credible solid defensive unit. If Allan Hutton were available for £2m I' happily snap him up too. With Bramble, Killgallon and Brown as support, I'd say our defence would be sorted.
