An awful lot has been made of Martin ONeills record as a manager, that he is top class, has a fantasitic win ratio, has won several trophies and been in the Champions League, but this collective record is boosted massively by his time at Celtic, where he was managing one of the two biggest teams in the Scottish division with a huge gulf to the third ...

This got me thinking, in relation to his premier league record ...

Which managers of NUFC over the last decade or so would you think would be incapable of giving their managerial hit rates and averages a similar boost if they had several years to manage Celtic ?

Which players would have made the SPL?

All of them! Even the reserves for our youth team!

He's ruined most clubs he's been at. How the hell he ever became our manager.

in all honesty, probably in a corrupt manner. that report a while back into corrupt football transfers named four as the most interesting, three were Souness transfers and I think all three were the toon (one was Boumsong, but I can't remember the others)

Souness has never been far from accusations of interesting dealings. When all of the **** at rangers was being investigated last year his name popped up more than once, and not just for the time he was there as manager.

That said, in terms of the OP's question Souness did pick up a fair bit of silverware while Rangers manager.

I still stick pins in my effigy of Gordon Lee and have done every night since he sold Supermac.

I used to be pretty pally with Bobby Cowell's son Barry(his nickname was Badger, even all those years ago....<laugh>).

Anyway he told me the story about Joe Harvey ( did some scouting after he stood down as manager) who had been watching Alan Hansen, and had been for some time. He told Gordon Lee and recommended that they go up and watch him, in the game they watched Hansen had a blinder and Joe had said to Gordon Lee he'd been outstanding every time he'd seen him play.

On the way back to Newcastle Gordon Lee was quiet in the car and Joe said " what do you think of him "

    Lee replied " I don't sign Scotsmen "

    The rest is history.

Supermac was my first football bereavement. I was a wide-eyed, innocent fan who couldn't understand how a Newcastle player was scoring goals for Arsenal. My dad's explanations of the transfer system never seemed to make it make sense.

I seem to remember Gordon Lee explaining that he felt having individual stars in a team was neither the way forward or the way he wanted to go.

    Absolute bulls knacker.

That's because the way he wanted to go was towards Everton, leaving us in the **** and with Richard Dinnis as manager!!

yes, going back to the OP I would imagine Souness could also boost his averages in Scotland, so to speak
