LEE CATTERMOLE believes he could operate in a more attacking role â if Gus Poyet opts to restore the Teessider to Sunderlandâs midfield. Cattermole has been forced to bide his time since returning from suspension, with the former Sunderland captain making his return off the bench against Spurs last weekend after being an unused substitute for the previous three games. With on-loan Swansea man Ki Sung-Yeung thriving in the holding midfield role, head coach Poyet has struggled to incorporate both Cattermole and the South Korean in the same side. But Cattermole, who played alongside Ki in Kevin Ballâs stint as caretaker, is confident the pair can work in tandem, even if it means playing in a more advanced midfield role. Cattermole said: âAt the Under-21 Championships (in 2009) I played on the right of three with Mark Noble and (Fabrice) Muamba behind us. It worked well. âWe got to the final and I felt it complemented the energy Iâve got to get around the pitch. âBut itâs the gafferâs decision and Iâm happy to play in whichever role he thinks Iâm best suited too. âThe manager sets the formation up, but I think if you look at the first three league games I played this season, me and Ki played really well together. âObviously it was a different style, but we can play together. âBut itâs the gafferâs team. He sets the side up and if itâs one in front of the back four at the minute and heâs choosing to go with Ki and doesnât see me any higher up, Iâll have to sit tight and hopefully get my chance.â Poyet must decide whether to start with Ki and Cattermole together for the first time during his stint as Sunderland boss in tomorrowâs crunch clash at fellow strugglers West Ham. Basement boys Sunderland head into the encounter with a minimum five point gap with all of the teams above them in the Premier League table. And with the Black Cats beginning to be cast adrift, Cattermole admits Sunderland are running out of time to register the victories needed to avoid the drop. The 25-year-old added: âWeâve talked long enough. We can say we need to do this or that, but we need to start winning games. âYou can have millions and millions of different reasons why, but we just need to keep believing in ourselves, roll our sleeves up and dig in.â âYou canât keep counting the games down. âWe need to win 10, simple as that. However we do it, we have to start doing it quick. âThe next games are crucial. Weâve proven we can beat Man City, so we can beat all the other teams as well. âBut we need to start performing every week and try to put some points on the board. âWeâve played a lot of the big teams at home which is difficult. âWe need to go to West Ham, roll our sleeves up and have a right good go.â
He is joking, he is not a and never will be a goal scorer..he is somebody I would sell in Jan if decent money can be had, bring in a creative CM and who can score the odd goal
He realise's this is his only way of playing for us now Ki has got the holding role nailed. I still like Catts.
Ki has more vision, technique and Attacking talent than 3 Cattermole's, if anybody should get the AM role it's him. But to Catts credit, his passing has come on leaps and bounds, I truly believe Catt's can combine DM duties with that of a deep lying playmaker. Something that Ki clearly can't do. Ki isn't great at protecting the back 4.
I dont think he is saying he wants the AM role, but that he doesnt have to play as a DM only. Having said that, i dont see where he would fit into a 3 man midfield even if he plays a more central role. Who do you drop?
Personally would play a midfield 3 of Colback/Catts/Ki Catts can defend the back 4 and whip balls out with his long ball ability Ki can move around and give options to other players Colback to be the engine who just runs from box to box
If he's part of of a 451/433 setup then the likes of Giacc and AJ will be deployed in close quarters anyway. We want Ki feeding three players not just one. Hopefully with Jack or Catts making bursting runs with our fullbacks attacking down the flanks like they like to do, adding the width.
I have watched Cattermole for the last few seasons. His passing and vision has improved massively. Him and Ki could (IMO) be a very good partnership. I hope he gets the chance to show what he is capable of. We look a more determined side when he's part of it and that is something you simply can't teach. Nobody leads like he does.
Marcus man, he ie sh*te, a liability, a clogger who is best a Championship player. We need to move on from him or will go down ! No offence but in 3 year I have never enjoyed watching him play. Chicken with no head !
Anyone think a '**** it, let's go for it' 3-5-2 would work? We are pretty ****ing useless at the back bar Wes anyway, and we need wins, and we need to control midfield Mannone Celuska - Wes - Jack AJ - Catts - Ki - Dunno about this side...Ba? Karlsson? Anyone but Seb? Giacc Fletch - Jozy We might get raped a few times, but then we are anyway, at least against weaker midfields we should be able to boss it.
Two holding, 3 ahead of them and one striker. Full backs high up the pitch. All the cool kids are doing it. ---------Catts Ki Johnson Giacch Borini ----------Altidore Who in that front 6 is not in their best position?!
Ah the anti cattermole brigade. You never watched him outplay Nigel De Jong when we neat city?? If you didn't then you need to seriously look at what you're watching. People have a pre conception about Catts and will say he's ****e if he clears 5 from the goalline and scores a hattrick. My guess is you've not watched him and judge only On your preconceptions of him
I just wish some of our players had the passion and commitment of Clatts. Imagine Seb with Clatt's fire x
