‘Devastated’ John Carver: I’ve never been so agitated as in the Paolo Di Canio derby

Paolo Di Canio slides to his knees to celebrate Sunderland's stunning 3-0 win at Newcastle in April 2013
JOHN Carver says he’ll never forget Newcastle United’s derby embarrassments – and the day he felt like “taking the law into his own hands”.

Carver takes his team to the Stadium of Light tomorrow looking to end a run of four successive defeats to Sunderland.

We decided to go it for it and, when we lost the game, in hindsight you’d say we should have stuck with the point
    John Carver
The 50-year-old, taking charge of Newcastle in a Wear-Tyne derby for the first time in his own right, is still hurting from those losses, especially the 3-0 home defeat when then-Sunderland manager Paolo Di Canio slid on his knees in April 2013.

Carver was also devastated by the 1-0 home defeat earlier this season, when the Tynesiders were caught on the break by a late Adam Johnson goal as they pressed for a winner.

“The two that stick in my mind are the one from this season where they scored late on,” recalled Carver.

“I was sat there thinking ‘should we have stayed with the team we had on the pitch and broke that run of three losses in a row? Or were we right to go for it?’

“We decided to go it for it and, when we lost the game, in hindsight you’d say we should have stuck with the point.

“When I went home, it wasn’t much fun. It never is, no matter who you lose against, but to lose against Sunderland was devastating.

“I just went home and sat by myself, never spoke to anybody, and put the television on.

    “It hurts that much.”

Di Canio slid on his knees after Sunderland’s second goal, and boyhood Newcastle fan Carver found that hard to take.

“The season before that, when Paolo was sliding on his knees, I’ve never been so agitated in my life,” he said.

“I wanted to take the law into my own hands that day because of what I watching our in our stadium.

“It was very, very difficult to take, but you have to take it on the chin and accept it.

“From that day, that is something that really motivates and drives me to try to get the right result.”

Newcastle’s derby record haunted former manager Alan Pardew.

Asked if the Magpies’ recent results against Sunderland were embarrassing, Carver said: “It’s not good.

“I’ve been in a situation where we’ve had a similar sort of record, and I’m sure they weren’t happy with that situation.

“We have some new players, but they’ve played in it, so there’s no reason for them not to be ready for it.”

He wanted to take the law into his own hands because somebody celebrated by sliding on thier knee looking up to his fans? ****ing hell, There's the mag mentality all over. How ****ing embarrassing for him. They call us inbred? There rest of the country have developed while the Mags remain cave men. If that's not from inbreeding why the **** can't they evolve? <laugh>
