Surely a few of you must have had a model T Ford as a first car? In black I'm guessing.

My first car (that actually worked properly) was a white Volkswagon Polo (very reliable). Cost me £700. That's right, I'm not a petrol head <laugh>

Started with a Mk 1 Cortina . £40 Army black matt with a red leaded underside and boot with a fibre glass long whip aerial. This was when I discovered I was handy with a socket set .
Ford Corsair 2000E free from my brother in law, welded by a local garage in exchange for the Cortina.
Mk 2 Cortina 1600 £500 with a bank loan ( after an interview with the bank manager , yes they did exist and that was the protocol)
Numerous Cortina 1600Es , in varying conditions and prices but all worthy of my love or messing around with the mechanics and the such like.
Triumph 2500 Pi , another freebie off a gentleman in Hurstpierpoint during the hurricane season in 1987 for cutting down over hanging trees which threated to flatten his house after the storm.
Rover SDI the best car I've owned but I couldn't afford to run her as a daily driver.
    Mk 4 Cortina estate
Rover 75 tourer another fine car and I'd have another in shot , a classic for the future.
    BMW E36 rather bland
Cavalier Mk 2 SRI & CDI models , cracking cars
Cavalier Mk 3 1600 very non descript
Allegro (hateful car) , Marinas, Itals , Land Rover freelander & Defender 110 .
I'm currently own an old BMW E30 2.5 ( one of many I've had over the years) and one I'll keep to hand on when I make my departure.
In the family we've had Ford Zephyrs , zodiacs and Executives , Fiat 120 ( the door skins would peel off from the bottom of the frames and flap as you drove along) Beetles (dreadful items of transport).Skodas ,Minis ,Mk1 escorts .

I bought a Mini HEX22 one Saturday afternoon in 1968 for fifty quid. My dad was a mechanic and said I was nuts and had thrown my money away. On the Sunday morning an older mate came past and offered me eighty. When I kept saying no I didn't want to sell t he went up to £92-10 (50p) When I went in with the money dad couldn't believe it. In 1977 I gave up work and became a car dealer. Just retired after 43 years.

Over the years I had a few interesting cars on my forecourts. Ford Cortina Uren Savage V6 I bought from an RAF jet fighter pilot. A Jensen Interceptor I bought for £400 from a customer who had crashed it on third party insurance and a Wolseley Hornet ( Mini with a boot) convertible that was given as a prize by Campbell's Soup. I sold it for scrap for £20. The last one sold at auction for fifteen grand! Currently doing a restoration on a 1958 MG ZB Varitone I bought from a man in Llandrindod Wells.

A yes Jeff Uren a Cortina " a wolf in sheep's clothing" .That and the lotus was my dream car. I see the Rootes garage as you drive through Llandrindod Wells has had a bit of a make over , nice to see the old British car manufacturers names are still there . The Hornet came with real wood dashboard ? Does your MG have a two tone finish ? a classy car with a name that nearly was phased out when BMC became the parent company

Yes, two tone grey, light top, dark bottom. The only thing about the Savage was that it had a standard Mk2 Cortine GT differential. You could accelerate away in fourth from a standstill bt it ran out of breath at 100 mph. The chap I bought it from flew a Lightning jet fighter and he reckoned the Cortine scared him more! The Hornet had a wooden dash, it had also been lowered and had a Downton cylinder head that made it faster than a Mini Cooper .

The Savage I think had uprated brakes and the gearbox from a 2000e Corsair but kept the steering box instead of a rack ,the only way to lose some slack in the steering was to tighten the square nut on the top of the box, no wonder he was scared <laugh>

Mini BAW 425L Dad bought it me after passing my test as a 17yo in 1990. I remember I had to lift the gear stick into 1st/3rd, and push down for 2nd/4th. Bloody brilliant first car, went everywhere in it.
