Little piece on the BBC here about Carrick retiring. For me he should have been an England great. It's ridiculous it never worked out for him at international level. He needed to find a long lost Spanish grandad or something. What a career though otherwise. http://www.bbc.co.uk/sport/football/43203679
Great player. Great vision and brilliant passer of the ball. Don't know why he didn't get more games at international level.
According to Bobby Robson's autobio, Robson wanted to sign Carrick as a successor to Gary Speed in 2004, Carrick was keen to come, but Freddie Shepherd didn't want him, and Kieron Dyer advised Robson to go for Nicky Butt instead and we ended up with Butt. How different things could've been with Carrick.
