  3. Jamie Carragher has today announced that he is to leave Liverpool Football Club at the end of the season and will be retiring from football.

The Reds defender has enjoyed a glittering career at Anfield, having joined the club's youth system aged nine before going on to make his first-team debut in January 1997 against Middlesbrough. He has subsequently made more than 700 senior appearances for Liverpool, winning a host of major honours. He is second only to Ian Callaghan in club's all-time appearance table.

The 35-year-old has made the announcement this week to end speculation surrounding his future.

He will continue to concentrate his efforts on helping Brendan Rodgers' side achieve success in the Barclays Premier League this season and the on-going Europa League campaign.

Carragher said: "This will be my last season at Liverpool and my last as a professional footballer.

"I'm making this announcement now because I don't want the manager or the club to be answering questions on my future when I've already decided what I am going to do.

"I will be fully committed between now and the end of the season to doing the very best for Liverpool Football Club, as I've done my entire career since joining aged just nine-years-old.

"It has been a privilege and an honour to represent this great club for as long as I have and I am immensely proud to have done so and thankful for all the support I have had. There are many memories I want to share and people to thank, but now is not the time for that.

"I won't be making any further comment on this decision until the end of the season; all our focus and concentration should be on achieving the best possible finish in the league this season and trying to win the last remaining trophy we are competing in."

He's done well since coming back into the team. But the signs of the end are there, so best to go out with no regrets and start planning for his future roles with the club.

According to the report on the radio he's breaking ties with the club completely, there was talk of him staying on in a coaching role.

  6. The statement above says the same but it also says he is speaking out to save the club having to answer questions. Maybe his role with the club has not been discussed and he is saying he will be leaving as that is the case at present?

is it true Pascoe is off at the end of the season or is that bollocks?

he could be being lined up for number 2 position.

I respect Carragher, despite having a very limited talent in terms of footballing ability, he developed himself into one of the best defenders of his generation.

Defenders like Carragher are rapidly becoming a thing of the past, players who know that their sole job is to stop the ball crossing the goal line & will literally do anything to ensure that it doesn't. Chucking their bodies on the line without a second thought.

His spirit was epitomised at the Emirates the other week, first game back in the side for ages & he puts in a man of the match performance, with the highlight being him stood there square on, as a shot is lauched into his solar plexus - he only hit the deck in agony, when he knew the ball was dead. Meanwhile at the other end Arsenal conceded a goal as 6ft 6" Mertesacker turned his back on the shot from Suarez.

    Last of the breed.

p.s. Can he please play in the derby as the Queen Mary turns quicker than him these days & I'd fancy Mirallas to skin him :)

Can't believe he's going, great player and servant to the club. I hope he stays on in some capacity or maybe one day returns at least.

Apparantly, he's a real student of the game who watches it at every level - I think he's an intelligent man who will go onto get his coaching badges sooner than later. Just a shame I can;t understand what he says!

Problem now is that we're losing another experienced player and a leader...

  19. He said in his book that he watches Spanish, German, Italian, American, etc football at all levels. Basically, if there is a game on he'll watch it. He also said this was a big difference between him and Stevie, Gerrard apparently likes his football but also likes to switch off from it too. Jamie is a self-proclaimed football junkie <ok>
