I was not overly pleased when he was appointed as manager, but he won me over and in the end did an outstanding job on limited resources. I remember at the time even in the year when we nearly got promoted there were quite a large section of fans moaning about why we had this clown in charge, who played hoof football. Then when we lost Bent and Kuqi there was a large vocal minority who were calling for his and sheepshanks head. Clearly whenever the club(and any football) is struggling people call for the head of the top people because they have no idea what they are doing. I would say by the end I remember sitting in the stand thinking it seemed like a large amount of people in the crowd wanted Royle to go and now people look back on him with rose tinted glasses, saying we played great passing football(we didn't) we played attacking direct football, I think the purest football we have played in the past 20 years was under magilton in the first couple of years of his reign. At the end of the day Royle did a superb job with what he had but many people say he would have got us promoted in the ME era, I'm not so sure, we just don't know, looking back at his transfer record at Man City there were some questionable signings. By the end of Jims reign aswell, most of the fans wanted him out, I was embarrassed to be a ITFC fan to see him get quite alot of stick from the fans even though he was so passionate about the club and had been here for a few years. Which is why it made me sick to the back teeth for Keane seemly not to get muchh stick at all when he was manager, the fans showed this vile human being more respect than they did Royle, Jim and Jewell, I just don't understand!!
