Never got to see him play sadly but literally just finished reading "The Greatest Player You Never Saw" which is a kind of biographical account of his life events as viewed by those who knew him. Pretty interesting read.
A rare talent when sober and in the mood. Jimmy Andrews brought him in and a few eyebrows were raised. But I enjoyed watching him. The book as hyou say, is a good read.
Its surreal to think of these guys passing away. In my head, Tony Villars is still a youngster. Mind you 68 is no age. It puts life into perspective and reminds me never to complain about getting old out of respect for those who didn't get the chance. Condolences to his family.
It frightens me that there are footballers and rugby players in top class sport, even at international level, who's dads I used to watch when they weremy age and younger. One of the reasons Im trying to do as much stuff as I can before I'm too old to. Used to take the p!ss out of my dad about needing reading glasses to tie hooks on when fishing or to read a footy programme or to get up after lounging on a river bank or pulling himself out of the car after a long drive. Now, I am my dad.
