Newport at home be nice to see them again cos it's been a few years. Probably lose to Blackburn away in the second round
We'll get someone like Southend or Northampton. Then get knocked out. It's still something to look forward to though
Hardly worth turning on the lights for some of these fixtures unless we are going to put 8-10K bottoms in the seats to improve our bank balance.
First and foremost, I'd like to see us get a home tie to start with. As (according to the Capital One Cup website) it's only single match games until the semi-finals (didn't the 2nd round used to be home and away?), at least a home tie "should" give us a better opportunity of actually winning a Cup match for the first time since about 1961 (well, it feels like that long ago!) For interest and bums on seats, you'd really want the Gas. Who else is going to bring more than a coachload in the first week of Aug? Maybe Newport I suppose. (Warning - "All Our Yesterdays" time again) I'm sure some of the other older people will remember back to the 60's and 70's when the League Cup was still a big thing. It actually retained that status (more or less) until the Premiership started in 92, when, for those in the top division, retention of status and league placing increasingly became far more of a priority because of the TV riches on offer. OK, the League Cup was always the poor relation of the FA Cup and rightly so, but certainly from the mid 60's (when the final started being held at Wembley) through to the 80's, it was still pretty well supported. I remember seeing City beat Leicester 2-1 back in 1970 (Leics included the likes of Shilton, Nish and Kellard in their team) in the 3rd round, watched by 16,575. Would we even break 10,000 if that was to happen again in a few months? Mind you, there was hardly any football on telly in those days, and only 4 channels! It just seems a bit of a shame that the League Cup is so maligned, when, aside from the league championships, it is still one of only 2-3 trophies that can be won in a season. But nowadays, no one really cares until the QF's when you have a realistic sniff of the old twin towers. Sorry chaps, I'll try to live in the "10's" in future posts and not back in the 60's and 70's!
Actually I think the big boys have started to care it can keep you in a job it's a way into Europe and the fans love a bit of silverware
