Why are your fans planning on wearing them? As a joke for the kick? Its not a dig, I couldn't care if you wear masks or not but thought I'd show you this comment from a Palace fan off a news story I read "Those who think that there is no link between the Cantona incident and Paul Nixon's death have never heard from those who were at that game. The media and people like Pat Creland made Matthew Simmons -- and by extension, Crystal Palace -- out to be scapegoats for ruining Manchester United's title race that season. Tensions were high before the FA cup match a few months later and Manchester United fans were out for revenge. Manchester United fans spat and hit Crystal Palace fans, some of whom were woman and children, while saying things like "that's for Cantona". Nixon was trying to help Palace fans get back on a supporters bus before the game when he was hit over the head with a brick, stabbed and then thrown in front of the bus -- an act of murder for which no one was ever tried. Many Palace fans boycotted the replay and during the one minute silence for Nixon, some United fans sung Cantona songs. At the next game at Selhurst, United fans sung "the wheels on the bus go round and round" in reference to Nixon's death. Cantona isn't to blame for Nixon's death, but there is no doubt if it wasn't for that incident that Paul's death wouldn't have happened. That's why Palace fans are so disgusted by Manchester United fans talking about wearing Cantona masks at Selhurst." So what do you make of it? Should you still wear them?
We have played Crystal Palace many times since that incident, so I don't see what's so special about this game, that our fans are wearing masks
Guess people wear the masks to remember one of our greatest players, at the scene of one of his most memorable incidents. Same way they wore masks at Anfield back in 2009 to remember the "Au Revoir Cantona" banner your lot had up back in the 90s. The connections with Paul Nixon are just tenuous BS imo. It was a tragic incident, but he's no more to blame for the death than the fan who racially abused him, or the media and FA who victimised him, or the referee who sent him off, or the player he fouled. The blame lies with the fans who used Cantona as an excuse to stab and attack him, and them alone. There are still Palace fans trying to argue Cantona should never be interviewed or discussed ever again, as if he somehow plotted the whole thing. And the Utd fans wearing Cantona masks are not doing it in connection with the death of Nixon at all. Palace fans are just looking for an excuse to be outraged imo - it would be like if we criticised Chelsea for celebrating their CL win on the basis that they won it in Munich.
Yes forgot about you wearing them at Anfield, just re read up about it But yeah, like I say was interested in getting the thoughts on it
