I watched Giach in 6 out of 9 pre-season games, he sharp very sharp in most of the games, his link up play was spot on down the left with PVA. The sooner he is back the better.

Emanuele Giaccherini could make his Sunderland comeback against Spurs next month.

The Italian impressed in pre-season but missed the the start of the Premier League campaign after suffering a groin injury in the Black Cats’ final friendly against Udinese.

Boss Gus Poyet says Giaccherini’s recovery is on schedule and he is due to return to training at the end of next week.

The trip to QPR a week on Saturday will come too soon for him.

However, with the international break then leaving Sunderland without a game for a fortnight, the midfielder could return to action when the league resumes with Spurs visiting the Stadium of Light on September 13.

Poyet said: “Giacchy was outstanding in pre-season.

“Those kind of injuries are three weeks and we are almost two weeks into it.

“He will be very close for QPR, but I don’t want to risk it.

“I know people say there is no good time to get injured but you definitely do not want it to happen in pre-season.

“After you have done all that running it is really unlucky to be injured just before the season starts.

“We will be looking after the international break for sure.”

Giaccherini missed out on a place in Cesare Prandelli’s World Cup squad this summer but he will be hoping for a recall under new Italy boss Antonio Conte - the manager who took him to Juventus in 2011. Meanwhile, summer signing Billy Jones has now returned to full training after recovering from the hamstring problem which ruled him out of the season opener at his old club West Bromwich Albion.

The Bosman arrival could be in line for a competitive debut against Manchester United on Sunday.

His absence - and that of Santiago Vergini - meant Poyet had to play veteran Wes Brown at right-back at The Hawthorns.

Poyet added: “Billy is training this week.

“The West Brom game came too soon and we could not risk him,

“We were looking forward to seeing more of him in pre-season and now we want to see him 100% fit.”
