If you haven't seen the movie Moneyball yet, do yourself a favour and check it out. I read the book a few years ago, very interesting. It's about the Oakland Athletics who have the smallest payroll in baseball. One thing they have always been good at is bringing young talent through their farm system, but as these players shine inevitably the A's can't keep them as clubs like the Yankees, Braves, Giants etc all offer them so much more money at the end of their contracts. Moneyball deals with the strategy employed by Billy Bean, the General Manager who decides to sign all the unwanted players with decent averages on the cheap and within the club's limited budget to try and develop a team capable of doing the imposdible - getting to the play-offs. I won't go into any more detail in case you haven't seen the movie yet, but it is a similar strategy Warnock has used in the past. If Leeds can do a Moneyball, we should at least be a lot more competitive next season.
