The Black Cats striker has bounced back from a serious injury last term to earn himself an England cap but is still yet to really solidify his place in Martin O'Neill's starting line-up. However, the former Manchester United forward believes that if he has a good pre-season in what will be his first for the club since joining Sunderland in 2009, that will enable him to claim a first-team spot and take over the departing Nicklas Bendtner. Campbell will also have to battle it out alongside the likes of Connor Wickham, Ji Dong-Won and Ryan Noble who are all vying for a regular place up front. Double figures "I would like to think if I played the majority of games I could easily hit double figures, but I just want to concentrate on being fit and putting myself in a position where I can be that player (who solves the goalscoring problems)," he told North East-based newspaper The Journal. "I have not been playing for the last couple of seasons so it would be hard to put a tag of prolific striker on me. For me, it is just a case of concentrating on my football, and if I score a few goals then I score a few goals. It is something to aim for. "If I have a good pre-season and get as fit as everybody else then it helps you a lot. During the season the training is not as intense as it is at the beginning and you don't really get that good, solid base. But, hopefully this time it will be different for me."
I see him being a bit player next season. I know this is harsh on a kid that came back from a career threatening injury, however IMO he is not a striker that can take us forward. I hope he proves me wrong, but I can see him leaving next season - when MON has another season to get his own players in.
