Chelsea are hopeful of completing the deal for Bolton Wanderers' Gary Cahill today following delays over the buying club's insistence that new financial fair play regulations (FFP) mean they are prepared to pay him a relatively low – by their standards – £50,000 a week.

It has meant a longer than usual negotiation with Cahill and his agent, John Seasman, who had been taken aback by Chelsea's original offer and Andre Villas-Boas's announcement at the end of last month that the two parties were "miles apart". The club agreed a fee of around £6m with Bolton long ago but wages have taken much longer.

Chelsea regard their £50,000-a-week opening offer as the way forward. With the pressure of complying with FFP, introduced from last summer, the club told Cahill that the days of them handing out new contracts in the £90,000-plus-a-week category are over.

    ...............................................................................................................................................................................

Raises a few interesting points. Can they still poach good players like Modric or Tiote if they're not prepared to pay mega bucks? Looks like existing players on mega deals might be allowed to leave when they expire. Can only be good news

I think if they'd signed a good player, they would have given him a huge wage like. Just Gary Cahill isn't that good and is worth nowhere near that

i think the FFP rules will likely be used as a convenient excuse during contract negotiations from now on. expect ashely to trot that one out from now on.

Surely it only brings us closer to the bigger teams at the top.

There will be loopholes as always but it could stop players like Carroll leaving again for stupid wages somewhere else.

Wouldn't surprise me although it is a consideration worth thinking about. I think our wage structure is to cover off the FFP anyway.

Agreed. I don't think Liverpool, Arsenal, Chelsea are too much ahead of us tbh. If Van Persie leaves Arsenal then I'd say we were pretty even tbh. Man Utd seem to be short of dosh too so you never know what will happen.

Don't understand how some teams are going to balance their books with the wages they have players on. Good to see Smith etc on their way out this season.

Yep, got a bad feeling Colo might go as he is on about as much as Smith I think and they seem to be taking an awful long time renegotiating this contract of his.

Thing is, clubs like Man U, Arsenal and Chelsea (and to a lesser extent Man City and Spurs) also have access to wider fan bases etc, so they have more potential revenue.

EDIT: Just to qualify that, Man City have huge revenues by sponsoring themselves.

Great centre back for whoever gets him. Needs a move for Englands sake as much as anything else. Very good defender and a great attitude. I'd love to think others will follow Chelsea's stance but I have my doubts. I think most will just milk what they can before these rules kick in properly. It's a good sign and I'm glad Chelsea have been the ones to take the first step as they were responsible for the latter part of the spiralling in transfer/wages with Abramovich. We must accept our own part of the blame of course for the initial spiral!!

This is going to happen in every club, from the biggest to the smallest, and I'm looking forward to it.

There are still big revenues around, but it will make every club a lot tighter with their spending.

Poor players having to survive on just 50k a week. Do you think they'll survive?

Certainly a time for clubs to be improving their scouting and youth systems, bringing in young talent and keeping it at the club is definitely the way forward as clubs won't be able to pay huge transfer fees too much longer.

Agree with the latter half, but I'm afraid you have to question the attitude statement with regards Cahill. He's been abysmal this year, and the pundits are all saying "it's because his head has been turned"... If that's the case that's a piss-poor excuse for not giving 100% for your current employers til you leave (if Tiote or Ba leaves we could never complain of that), and the fact he wants astronomical wages just reveals he's a big-headed idiot. The way he's been playing, I think he should have snatched there hand off if they'd have offered him £30,000 a year, let alone a week.

Last year he was a sensation, and looked a good prospect, but if he can't keep a consistent level, why should he be anywhere near an England jersey?

Agree to disagree. Done fairly well whenever I've seen him, and just look at his recent performances for them even when he was in negotiations of late. He scored last week. I'd prefer to take Coyles judgement on his attitude. If he thinks his mental state and attitude is so good he can trust him even when he knows he's leaving, speaks volumes for the lad. Said very little too and kept his own counsel in a thoroughly professional manner. He would be very very unlucky not to be in the squad for the Euros. Yet to have a bad game for England and has done well this year when he has played proving he's just in a bad team with key injuries at Bolton.

Seems to me the only reason you think he's played well is because he scored last week, i think he's been dreadful this season, at deffending anyways.

It still blows my mind that people can earn as much in a week as some people earn in 3 years

I can't believe that someone like Cahill would want 100k.

All that paper talk of him has seemed to have gone straight to his head, he's not that good, certainly not a top 4 defender
