    Just to let everybody know, all the season posts are now complete.

    Every season in a First-team Peacetime league. 93 I think, from 1921-22 to 2019-20 (6 seasons missed during WW2).

    I still have several areas to cover;
    • The amateur seasons (1905 to 1921)
    • The War seasons (1940 to 1946)
    • The Cup Competitions
    That should keep me busy for two or three years.
    In the meantime I'll begin by overhauling each season post, adding as much missing information as I can and putting in new features.

    Regards,
    Lardy <ok>

    Most kind Ffs.
    Just to let you know, my first Season update is completed - for season 1921-22 <ok>

    • A few bits of extra data about players has been added (mostly filling in gaps using info sent to me by other members).
    • A bit of extra info added to the League positions table, showing how far ahead / behind, the teams above or below Charlton were at any given point in the season.
    • A new "Team of the season" table with personal performance stats for the 11 players who appeared the most times for Charlton in season 1921-22, plus some other stats about that season.
    • A new "World of 1921-22" table giving some background snippets on the times, plus the winners of all the domestic leagues & the FA Cup that season.
    I hope these updates add a bit of colour and interest to the season posts.
    Will be updating future seasons in order, as I did when creating the originals.

    By the way, the original links at the top of page 1 of this thread should still work.

    Another update regarding the 1921-22 season:

    I have changed table 3 slightly,
    Now it shows the actual number of points of the teams directly above & below Charlton,
    not the points difference.

    I think this makes a bit more sense.

    I did consider putting in the points of all other teams after every fixture.
    But this would take a long time, and it would lead to a table absolutely filled with numbers.
    Visually, I don't think it would work.
    I think it would make the table too cluttered.

    Just to let you know, I have altered table 3 in the 1921-22 season post.

    That table now shows the points total for EVERY league position that season.

    Originally I wasn't going to fill in every square, as I thought it might just make the table confusing to look at (a huge jumble of numbers).
    But I think I have partly solved that problem by shading the numbers different colours;

    0-9 ... grey
    10-19 ... blue
    20-29 ... yellow
    30-39 ... green
    40-49 ... pink
    50-59 ... blue (again)
    60 + ... yellow (again)

    I think it is still possible to see Charlton's position clearly enough,
    but will lots of extra information also on the table.

    In time this 1921-22 table can be compared to tables from other years, to see which seasons were unusual from the point of view of points required to achieve certain positions in the league.

    I will update the 1922-23 table and the 1923-24 table before continuing to update the whole posts of future easons.

    Something new from the stats pages;

    Player rankings by decade (1921-1930) ... under construction

    My attempt to use simple player performance data to rank the best 21 players of each decade.

    Squad of the decade: The 1920's

    Image 1920-30.png

    If you'll bear with me I will try to explain how this might work;

    I am trying to use & merge two sets of data to determine which are the best 21 players (the best squad, if you will) of any decade in our history, starting with the 1920's.
    These are the numbers that I am using;
    • Number of matches played (see blue notes below)
    • Player's individual games won & games lost ratios compared to the team average from any given season (see dark red notes below)
    With so many players used in squads every season, a player's stats are only used each season if that player was one of the 11 most used players of the season. So the stats of fringe players will not appear.

    Where there age dark grey gaps in a player's stats, it does not necessarily mean that player was not in the squad that season; it just means that player was not one of the 11 most used players that season (either because they had left the Club, or through injury, or just being out of favour).

    BLUE NOTES:
    Number of matches played:

    This is the number that appears in blue in the "MP" (match points) column of each season.

    These stats have been included to try to balance out the performance stats, so that one brilliant season for a player automatically makes them the best player of the decade. But at the same time sheer numbers of games played must not swamp out the individual performance stats.
    If that was the case, then the top players of any given decade would simply be the ones who played the most games, regardless of whether or not the team played better or worse when they were part of it.

    So rather than (for instance) awarding 1 point for each league game played, I decided to award a scale of points as follows;

    10 ... for playing in every league game of the season (42 games in the 1920's)
    9 ..... for playing in 41 games
    8 ..... for playing in 40 games

    and so on, down to 1 point for playing in 33 games - or any number of games below that.

    So if a player never missed a league game in the entire calendar decade, they would gain 100 "Match points".
    This would compensate for the fact that such a player could not earn any performance points (the numbers in the dark red column).
    Performance points (plus or minus) can only be earned if a player plays fewer than all 42 games in a season.
    By definition, if they play every game, their win & defeat ratios will be the same as the whole team average.

    So - in a nutshell - the "MP" Match points are there as a way to acknowledge the contribution of a player who plays a very large number of games, but without the number of games alone totally dominating the individual performance stats and rendering them meaningless.

    DARK RED NOTES:
    Individual win & lose ratios of players:
    This is the number that appears in dark red in the "%P" (percentage points) column of each season.

    This number compares the ratio of wins and defeats the individual player was involved in, compared with the proportion of wins and defeats of the whole team that season. These numbers are shown as percentages on the "Players of the Season" table, close to the bottom of every Season Post.

    The number shown on the table above is the net sum of the two ratios (wins & defeats).
    So if a player had a win ratio 10% better than the team, but a defeat ratio 5% worse than the team, the net number would be +5
    This is a measure of how much better an individual player performed in a season than the team as a whole.

    Total Points:

    When all the blue & dark red numbers are added up, the total appears in the last column.
    Players are then ranked on the table by that total number.
    This gives us one way to estimate who were the best 21 Charlton players of any given calendar decade.

    _________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________

    Please note:

    This is something of an experiment.
    The data is a bit crude and far from complete. But to add more factors would require more time than I could possibly commit.

    And it is not supposed to be a definitive measure of the relative qualities of our best players in history.
    Just a guide as to how they performed; something for debate.

    Right now the 1920's table shows only the season results for 4 seasons (1921-22 through to 1924-25)
    I have to complete a "Team of the Season" table for every season in a decade before I can bring all the numbers together to create a complete "Squad of the Decade" table.

    Naturally this will take quite some time. And I may need to adjust things on the way.
    Anyway, we'll see what it looks like in a few months.

    Regards,
    Lardy

    I'm sorry there is no simple way of explaining the idea I'm trying out.
    It's just a way of trying to assess the skills and efforts of players long past.

    To bring them to life a little for fans who may not know much about them, but without spending years writing a huge book about them (whih I wouldn't mind doing, but don't have the means to unless I win the lottery).
    The names at least of these wonderful old time players should not be forgotten.

    Though I don't know any of them except by a few fragmented notes and faded old pictures, I admire those players as much as I admire great Charlton players from my lifetime and memories.
    How amazing it must have been to stand on the East terrace in all weathers with 40,000+ fans and watch Jimmy Seed's Charlton play in the 1st Division.
    Or go even further back and watch the pioneers back in the 1920's.

    We have a proud history. Something the crooks and spive of our own time cannot take away from us.

    28th June update:

    I've added one more season's stats to the 'Squad of the Decade' table.
    Data is now included for
    1921-22
    1922-23
    1923-24
    1924-25
    1925-26
    Just 4 more years to add, to give a complete picture of the 1920's.
    This will take a little while, as the numbers take time to crunch.

    Also I will be adding the two extra tables and updating the existing tables for season 1925-26 shortly.

    The updating of each season and the production of the 'Squad of the Decade' table will run parallel from now on.
    As each individual season is updated, the information will be added to the 'Decade' table... on through the years from the 1920's to the present day.

    24th December update:

    Now I've got some time during this Christmas holiday I'll continue to update the individual season posts with extra information.
    The updates are indicated on the link list in the first post of the thread.

    I'm going to overhaul the 'Squad of the Decade' stats once the individual season posts are all updated.
    This probably won't happen for several months.

    29th December update:

    I have updated the 1921-22 and 1922-23 season posts with an addition to the 'Team of the Season' (section 6).
    It's a new five place table listing the best performing players from that season outside the 11 players who started the most games.

    Effectively a 'best of the rest' chart to highlight well performing fringe players from the given season.
    I'll carry on adding this new section to each season post as they are created...

    14th March 2021 update:

    I am beginning a fresh round of updates to the stats tables, beginning with the 1921-22 season.

    Tables are all being updated to 1,000 pixel width format, which will make them easier to read and will often allow extra new data and information to be added.
    I hope this will make these historical tables a more interesting read...

    30th April 2021 update:

    I have removed the Player Profiles from all the newly updated seasons.
    As each new season is newly updated I will remove the player profiles from those as well.

    Two main reasons for this change;

    1. Speed of updating

    I can produce the newly updated 1,000 pixel wide Season tables more quickly if the player profiles are removed.

    2 (more important in my view)

    I think the Player profiles need to be re-vamped to show better images and more information about each player.
    This will become even more necessary as the profiles move through history towards the present day, when much more information is available about modern players. I think the player profiles deserve their own completely new section - a new thread in effect.

    I'll begin working on this when all historical seasons are updated to 1,000 pixel wide format.
    I hope nobody minds this change too much.
    New improved player profiles will eventually appear...
