A former SAFC player has been charged with rape.

Midfielder Cabral, real name Adilson Tavares Varela, is due to appear in court after being accused of attacking a woman whilst he played for SAFC.

A Northumbria Police spokeswoman said: “We can confirm Adilson Tavares Varela was arrested on January 25, 2015, and was subsequently charged with rape on June 24, 2015.”

The former Swiss international, now with FC Zurich, has already made appearances at Newcastle Crown Court and is due to appear again next month.

He has pleaded not guilty to two counts of rape, with the trial due to begin on April 25.

Cabral, 27, from Cape Verdi, signed for SAFC in the summer of 2013 and played two games for the club.

On February 2 last year Sunderland confirmed that Cabral had left the club by “mutual consent.”

No idea? Hes no longer part of our club now, so the last thing our club needs at the moment is bad press. Especially off our local rag!

If you look at the fail/sun and chronic the emphasis is that he was a team mate of Johnson!

Ah so that's why he's been charged with (but not yet found guilty of) rape! It must be a Sunderland thing!

Doesn't reflect too well on Sunderland. Got rid of a reserve player (we all know what 'mutual consent' means) on the back of an accusation yet Adam Johnson continued to play and even briefly captained you right up until the guilty plea. Who the **** makes the decisions at the top of your club?!

Not good mind! But maybe different circs as none of us know.

Maggie Byrne made the decisions. Johnson situation is different as he was adamant he was innocent and worth investing the clubs time in - Cabral wasn't worth any time being invested

Eh? Unless I'm reading it wrong, he was arrested in January 2015, left Sunderland in February 2015 and charged in June 2015. So he and the club parted ways before he was even charged. And he intends to plead not guilty.

Sorry mate missed your EDIT. Fair enough, we don't know what was said off the record. We do know that Johnson admitted kissing a 15 year old from the offset though (or at least, gave the club all the evidence they needed to easily draw that conclusion).

I'm not trying to score points on this btw, some things matter far more than football. I just hope Byrne is the only person responsible for these decisions and she's now paid the price. Would not like to think there are others who've got away with it because of her being the scapegoat.

JC - it's all a shockingly sad sorry mess and the person largely responsible for the club reaction has gone -end but southern based &mischievious press/media keep digging - I expect more casualties at the club after we are safe - <cheers> - I think your old manager may save us both - Villa, Palace & Norwich for the drop

That can't be the sole criteria. If everyone who was sh!t left then our two clubs combined would struggle to put out a first team.

You actually have access to the internet in Broadmoor?
Shocking that like. I'll have to get on to my MP, Mr Jones.
No good at all that. :emoticon-0112-wonde:emoticon-0138-think:emoticon-0145-shake

It's been handled atrociously and it does seem to me that Margaret Byrne has to shoulder most if not all of the responsibility. We both know though that the actions of a few gets the whole club judged - see horse punchers, club funerals etc.

Yes, if Palace can be as bad in the next 10 games as they have in the last 10 then we have a chance to catch them. I'd love nothing more than 3 NE clubs in the top league next year.
Actually, tha Anders Breivik **** is in the news at the minute. Seems he thinks that his games console and internet access isn't enough and breaches his human rights. He has more than I have, I can't even afford an Xbox <laugh>

Yes shame really cos at first I believe she was first female on one of top Premier league committees - I really thought we had a good influential board member - but these sort of messes are a regular occurrence at Sunderland <doh><doh>
