http://www.cafc.co.uk/page/NewsDetail/0,,10267~2532595,00.html i never saw that coming, hope it is not going to be the beginning of our good start coming undone! Sorry to be a ja starting all these threads, just happens to be a busy news day!
It was leaked on the Charlton forums, maybe not this one, over a week ago, as everyone was saying then, it could be a really big loss, but at least he's left us with a squad capable of getting out of this division.
I wonder if the Alonso signing has got anything to do with this? Not sure exactly where his influence and responsibilities began and ended but as things are going so well it is a bit disturbing to make a significant change in the management set-up. The fact that the announcement is so terse, and low key on the OS, suggests the parting was not entirely amicable. Maybe he was fed up with posters here calling him "The Italian Stallion"?
Yes, it was rather a brief message... Maybe he was fed up with posters here calling him "The Italian Stallion Or Prince... http://www.not606.com/showthread.php/53422-Does-Anyone-Else-Think-Jeff-Vetere-Looks-Like-Prince
mmm a strange one. thought him and Jiminez were tighter than the proverbial. doubt its a major rift. didnt understand why he needed the title anyway...if his remit was to scout talent and negotiate the deals then doing it whilst not formally attached to us would have been the obvious set-up.
Didn't he leave his role as chief scout at villa to come here last year? Maybe he had a falling out with Powell over Jan signings, Powell does seem to prefer players he knows. Maybe this is why Alonso hasn't featured?
I'd like to think it's because 'his job here is done', 'seeking new challenges', 'new goals on the horizon' etc. but the wording of the press release is a dead giveaway - there's been a falling out somewhere. IMO, a hefty chunk of the success this season is down to his astute scouting, but it seems to me that in the matter of recent signings and loans, CP has had the lions' share of the say. If you read the Ephraim story 'Why I chose Charlton over a gazillion other clubs...', he certainly arrived here by a most unorthodox route. It's a shame this, but maybe his job here is done, and done well.
Morrison and Kermagant were both Leicester people CP knew. Ephraim phoned us up (!) Virtually all the other signings were people who were established L1 players, that we would have played against and known about (BWP, Hollands, Wiggins, Taylor, Green, Stevens) or experienced L1/Championship type players (Hughes, Hayes, Russell, Cort) who were no secret. Evina played in L1 last season. Prithchard was a non league spot It'll be interesting to see who did the scouting for these players, as it's not as it we're bringing in loads of unknown players from around the world, thanks to brilliant scouting, it could have been Phil Chapple for all we know! Indeed the only foreign signings were Alonso and Bover, neither of whom are currently key members of the squad.
Most of the players brought in would have either played with or against Powell, can't get much better scouting. Than that
Bover was on trial with us last season, before the Stallion got involved with us. As far as I can see Alonso was Jeff's only contribution.
My first reaction was that this is terrible news, but the perspective of it does seem to point to potentially the Alonso decision as rightly pointed out a lot has come from Chrissy's input and contacts, what a good manager has and does. We will see how it plays out, only then we'll know where responsibilities lie.
Disappointed, but not surprised. A term used for him was "rolling stone". And he's not even got any top 10 hits. I hope he has helped guide our scouting operations since his return, and leaves us with phil Chappell being able to know the difference between dean Sinclair and bradley Pritchard.
