With signings like Tiote, just goes to show the little need in spending millions on players.

Newcastle United have in recent times becoming the "who?" boys after spending millions on "stars" like luque etc. With us being relegated those days dissappeared completely.

Hughton with little budget brought in cover to help us get promoted, okay everyone wants "that" signing, but weve learned to shut up and accept Fat Ashleys business model of running the finances properly.

This summer is a big one for the club and the media im sure will be linking all and sundry to the club come july. But what has proven in the past , the toon keep quiet about transfers until coming from the club directly, so we as fans have also learned to take every paper talk with a pinch of salt.

Now the question is, do we go for that star signing that the media will go ooooo? or do we simply invest in key areas of the squad such as LB , a forward etc etc. :emoticon-0105-wink:

IMO the latter will be the best option , investing in "hidden gems" like tiote will be the most viable, spending mall amounts and maybe that bit extra for a striker.

But lets be honest here, with names like Hulk etc thrown into the names of possibilities, we have to ask "what are we offering them?" . Bizarrelly Carroll had no incentive other than money which is such a shame, liverpool or 50,000 fans screaming your name every week, with 25 grand a week thats comfy living with adoring fans and a superb morale to boot. Yet he choose 70 grand and no guarantee of a starting berth especially as they look to bring in another striker. But hes a geordie lad and I wish him all the best.

Going back to the point, Star Signing or Squad strengthening with lots of "hidden gems" ?

    Well ask yourself this.

A team full of Tiotes and Ben Arfas or a team full of Owens, Luques, Boumsongs etc?

Big money signings haven't worked for us. Only Shearer has ever worked out and they just don't make them like him any more.

It does show that big money signings isn't the only way to progress. Sure; it can increase the speed of the overall improvement but when you think if that money used to purchase a player (lets say £15 million) can be used for in other parts of the club it's wonderful what you can do with it..

£15 million can improve your youth assets for a few years so that you can progress the players though a club system that reflects how the first team play.

Look at Barca. They have invested heavily in the set up where young players learn to be entirely comfortable on the ball, pass and move, retain possession and if they are deemed good enough to join the first team they already have the style and ethos the club utilises. There is no learning curve for them. Just do what you always do.

I'd love it if the club spend some cash but on the right players with the right mentality for the right positions at the right price and if we can also bolster the reserves and youth with some promising talent then all bodes well.

the youth set up at the club at this present time is probably better than it has been in years,we have a wealth of talent being brought on sensibly and through time this will benefit the club, the academy in my opinion is the one thing fat mike has got spot on whether this is down to good planning or trying to save a few quid who knows and who cares as long as it keeps working.

Very exciting times for me personally. Unknowns turning into overnight sensations are my favourite.

Maybe one day soon we'll have our own Rooney, or Fabregas, or even Messi.... KUTGW Peter Beardsley and the crew.

Like Liverpool used to. They're managers, up to Roy Evans used to come up through the ranks too. Even marquee transfer signings were expected to do a stint in the reserves to prove themselves and get to grips with the system.

Now they think they're still a big club and can just sign established players for ready-made success.
