Back page in tomorrow's Northern Echo is leading with a story about us pushing to sign Shelvey and Colback.

Would certainly bulk out our central midfield options and both players have a very strong work ethic. Not sure if Shelvey is creative enough to replace Cabaye but he's certainly a talent. Pretty sure Swansea would want something between 8m-12m for him though which could prove a problem.

We've also been heavily linked with Aaron Cresswell lately, anybody seen much of him? Mick McCarthy described him as "the best full back in the league". He's only 24 too.

So with three young English lads on our radar are we finally seeing a change in policy from the club? If we could add a Grenier/Cabella/Siem De Jong to the above along with two strikers then it'd be a positive window.

A lot of ifs and buts but would certainly be nice to have the steel and determination of Shelvey and Colback in and around the squad.

Squad players, yes. First teamers, no. Shelvey and Colback will not see us challenge the top 6/7.

I believe the man that would make the biggest difference is Demba Ba master of the half chance

I like both Colback and Shelvey. We will still need a No.10 though. There are not really any British options ready to step straight into a first team. Cabaye's replacement will have to come from other shores. Don't know anythign about Cresswell. Fully behind a change of policy but I'll believe it when it happens. I fully expect us to just take a few risks on cheaper foreign talent from France, Holland and Portugal etc.

We've also been linked with Dele Alli of MK Dons again. His manager thinks very highly of him:

“I’ve seen a few things in training which are things I’ve never seen in my life before. The kid is one of the best; he’s 17 and he’s winning penalties, scoring goals, driving inside, backheeling things, nutmegging people, winning his tackles, winning his headers, what’s he not got? He’s got an air of arrogance about him but confidence too, he’s one of the best English young players in the country, fact.”

Right, in that case, rewrite it with a change of name and age, put out a few news stories and let's ship out Shola, Gosling and Obertan for loads of money.

Missed the boat on Shelvey, I don't know that another move will work for him, he's in a good place and should give it another season or two to establish himself before moving on. Shelvey needs to be one of the first names on a team sheet for it to work for him, I believe. I don't think he's someone you can just drop in and get performances from.

    That is spot on.

Kind of thing we got to stop doing if we're going to progress into a club of credibility.

Caulker, Shelvey, Redmond, Ince, Gauld, Rhodes, Ings, Trippier, Robertson, Cresswell, Colback, Wickham, Will Hughes, Butland, Bryam, Ryan Inniss, Mason Bennett, Dele Alli, Angus Gunn, Ravel Morrison, Reise Allassani, Cauley Woodrow, Saido Berahino

Plenty of young British players to consider. Maybe the pricier ones like Caulker, Wickham, Gunn and Shelvey are out of our reach. Most of the others can be considered though. For starters I'd happily take a chance on Cresswell and Trippier as full backs. Debuchy is likely to go, why not buy Trippier, Bryam and Cresswell. You could then offload Santon and one of Haidara/Dummett too. This is the kind of thing we did under Robson with Dyer (bought by Gullit), Jenas, Bellamy, Milner, Griffin. There will be the some duffers that don't work out quite so swimmingly like Cort, Lua Lua, Bramble or Ambrose. Its a great base for your squad though. To be fair we are starting to produce a better calibre of player too. We need to look closely at the successful academies like Palace, West Ham, Derby etc, learn from them but poach from them nice and early too

I have to say that I regard Shelvey as massively over-rated. He scored a great goal the other day but I have seen him play many times and have never been impressed with him. If we were to sign him, there is no way we should be paying any more than £5m - otherwise forget him.

I concur. If there is any truth in this, and considering his price tag would likely be some way north of £5million, it is a sad fact that Shelvey would likely represent our Cabaye replacement.

Shelvey went for around 5-6 million and has hardly pulled up any trees down there. Still, Swansea would want 7-9 million for him. I find him overrated and a bald, Nazi Storm Trooper looking bastard. I don't want him here personally.

Reading Pardew's bollocks about 'because the money is the money' (no spelling error there - that's Pards words) its clear we will attempt to squeeze as much out of the meagre transfter kitty as possible so that means free transfers, bargain basement deals and all round w**kery heading towards St James in the summer. That combined with players leaving and that bottomfeeder here at the helm bodes very badly for next season.
