I think it's time Button gives up on his own title aspirations for this year and instead helps Hamilton. http://www1.skysports.com/formula-1/news/12433/7979063/ Last season Vettel averaged 20.63 points per race. If we assume Button dominates the next 9 races in the same way Vettel did last year, he will have 262 points. In that were to happen, Alonso would only need to average 11 points per race to beat Button - he's already averaging 14.9 points per race. Even if Alonso has some bad races, there are four other drivers quite far ahead of him. Let's face it, it's just not going to happen for Button this year. Button says: "I don't think the team will actually ask me to do that. I personally feel that until I can't win the Championship there is a chance, you really do never know." So of course Whitmarsh won't then ask Button to support Hamilton. However if Button were to say "me winning the championship is unrealistic, so I'll support my teammate and try again next year" then the team would listen to him and put all their focus on Hamilton. McLaren are in the same situation as Ferrari were mid-season in 2010, so Button needs to be wise - he must stop talking about his own title hopes and play a supporting role. If he doesn't he could inadvertently cost Hamilton the championship. Not that I will complain if that happens.

@ Forza, say what you mean man don't mince your words lol. Button has no chance in catching Alonso even though the Mclaren is a good car. Unfortunately it is only good in certain conditions where the Ferrari is a car for all seasons and along with Alonso's brilliant and opportunistic driving the Ferrari package of Alonso and the F2012 are where they deserve to be and it will be hard for the rest to catch Alonso but i do agree that Lewis and Vettel along with Kimi if the E20 passive ddrs works will be the main challenge to Alonso. As for Jenson i think he should concentrate on trying to beat his teammate who is 40 points in front, although i think it is a bit early for team orders.
Whilst I generally agree with the Ops thoughts on Button being an unrealistic title challenger the tone of the title is (IMO) uneccessarily harsh and I believe no driver with their salt in F1 should become a support driver, let alone openly admit it. I would imagine if he came out and stated that he was Lewis's No2 he would recieve even more derogatory comments. I think 2xwd.... comments are more constructive/appropriate!
Suprisingly i agree with Forza, Not his title of course, but the point is sound. Talking about the title is deluding himself. I think he should write off this year, do what he can for the team, hopefully winning another race. Then come back stronger in 2013.
http://www1.skysports.com/formula-1/news/12479/8009088/Button-I-took-a-wrong-turn He talks here about trying to win races and refers to being a long way back Alonso being able to manage out the championship.

I'm torn on this one... On one hand I see his point of view and if I were in his shoes, I wouldn't want to have to give up what little hope I had. On the other hand though, this still is a team sport and there does come a time when a team should pick which driver to put their chips on. McLaren should possibly be stepping in and making the decision for him. I doubt they will though. Maybe the question is can Button even get himself in a position to assist Hamilton if that was asked of him? With his recent form, not very likely.
buttons starting to annoy me now.all his "i can still win the championship" talk is rubbing me up the wrong way. he knows he cant win the championship, but he doesnt want to help lewis(not that he needs it)i dont think jenson can help lewis anyway.but jenson flat out doesnt want to even try to help lewis, because he is desperate to beat him again.but he has 0 chance,if lewis stays focused.or unless lewis has the worst luck with mechanical failures.
Has jenson being doing the rounds with the papers?, everyday i see a new sound bite from him like 'i can/cannot win the WDC'. I mean seriously he's a good driver so just do your talking on the track like Kimi!
It's almost like he's fulfilling his contractual obligations for PR or something! But no it's much more likely that he's just attention seeking....
