In the worst case of food contamination so far, frozen food giant Findus confirmed 15 out of 18 samples of their Italian meal tested positive for horse. But the Food Standards Agency revealed damning evidence that 11 out of 18 samples checked were between 60-100% horse. The FSA also raised fears animal paracetamol may have made its way into the food chain. The FSA said: âWe have no evidence to suggest a food safety risk. "But the FSA has ordered Findus to test lasagne for the veterinary drug phenylbutazone, or bute. âAnimals treated with phenylbutazone are not allowed to enter the food chain as it may pose a risk to human health.â Side effects include blood disorders and anaemia. The bute test results are expected by the weekend, Findus said. The latest contamination case was uncovered after Findus withdrew its 320g, 360g and 500g lasagne made by French firm Comigel. It scrapped three lines of lasagne two days ago amid serious concerns that they were tainted. Last night tests found 83% of the samples contained horse. A spokesperson said: âEleven out of the 18 samples that were tested fell in this higher band so the contamination could be from 61-100%.â In a statement, the company behind national favourites such as fish fingers and crispy pancakes, said: âFollowing a thorough investigation, Findus UK can confirm testing of its beef lasagne, produced by a third party supplier and not by Findus, has revealed some product containing horse meat. "We understand it is a very sensitive subject and we would like to reassure you we have reacted immediately. âWe are confident that we have fully resolved this supply chain issue. Fully compliant beef lasagne will be in stores again soon.â Last night Tesco and Aldi which also use Metz based firm Comigel to make own-label ready meals were awaiting results of DNA tests. Tesco has scrapped its Comigel-made Everyday Value Spaghetti Bolognese and Aldi withdrew Todayâs Special Frozen Beef Lasagne and Todayâs Special Frozen Spaghetti Bolognese as a âprecautionâ. According to French commercial data firm Kompassl, Comigel is listed as a frozen horse meat, pizza and fruit pie supplier. Run by 53-year-old Frenchman Erick Leharge, it has refused to comment on the unfolding scandal. Labourâs Shadow Food Secretary Mary Creagh stepped up calls for a police probe. She said: âThe latest revelations raise questions about the extent of this.â The scandal was first uncovered by the Irish Food Safety Authority after tests found burgers were bulked out with horse.
I've had one before it tasted horrible. It was a few years ago though so there might not have been horse in mine.
This is a thread to really stirrup the emotions. It has not been determined whithers horse meat is good for you or not, that is the mane concern and the decision must be taken with equininity. So , perhaps we ought ask Secrets halter ego, Sku-ball (for what its girth and anyway any pal of Secretâs is a palomine), whinny horse meat is good or bad. But I think horse meat is good in horse d'oeuvres, what do you chaps think. So do I whinny?

Don't see the problem as i eat them and my s### has always been good to firm. On a serious note we have all probably eaten horse meat (except veggies) when we have been away. The problem is the 'Buta' traces found in the meat and thats not ok. This is what happens when stores fight for custom they go for cheap option.

But to advertise horse meat as "beef" and the possibility that it may contain traces of a veterinary drug is worrying.
Not many of you will remember the horse meat stand at the Uxbridge Road end of the Bush market. every saturday there was always a big queue and dont tell me it was for the customers dogs. I have had horse meat in France and often eat sparrow type birds here. You also dont see stray dogs often in New Malden which has the biggest concentration of Koreans in the UK. Ellers is right, it is the drugs that animals are pumped with that is the problem. It is all about money.
Good post, drugs in meat are the problem. Little wild birds really are delicious although some people thing it's really not on to eat them.
