Bury’s last season in the 2nd tier. They were relegated on goals scored, finishing level on points with 3 sides who stayed up; Port Vale, QPR…..and POMPEY!


Who are Ya?
The club was formed in 1885 and joined the Football League Second Division in 1894, winning it at the first attempt. They remained within the top two divisions until 1957.
They twice lifted the FA Cup during this time. Their first final saw them triumph 4-0 over Southampton. Three years later they won the cup without conceding a single goal on the way. Relegation in 1957 saw them play in Third Division North for its final season, before continuing in the Third Division after that, until promotion in 1961 saw them back in the 2nd tier. Ten years later though, they found themselves relegated to the Fourth Division [League Two] for the first time. They remained in the bottom two divisions until back to back promotions in 1996 and 97 saw them in Div 1 [Championship] after a 28 year absence. Relegation in 1999 has seen them back in the lower leagues to this day.

This was Pompey’s first season in the top flight. The return match at Fratton Park was the next day! Pompey won that one 1-0. Bury finished 5th. In the days when only the bottom 2 went down, Pompey finished 20th out of 22. 1 point ahead of relegated Spurs and level on points with SIX other sides. Talk about a relegation battle!
