I thought it might be a bit of a whim for us to create a 23 man (world cup style) squad made up of players who have played for Pompey since 2000 [yes I know the 21st C actually started on 1.1.01 but let's not go there]

I would propose the squad to be made up of 3 goalkeepers, 7 Defenders, 8 midfielders and 5 strikers.

If we could set the ball rolling with GOALKEEPERS please:

Please make your suggestions below (as many or few as you wish) and, if we end up with more than 3 candidates we will put it to the vote.

Remember, just GoalKeepers please; we'll move on to other areas in a separate thread (provided there's any interest....) <ok>

I'll start with my three selections, in alphabetical order, so as not to suggest any favouitism!:

    Jamie Ashdown
    Shaka Hislop
    David James

    Here's my favouritism:

    1. Jamo
    2. Shaka
    3. Ashdown

Jamo just because he was (and still is) an absolute hero and was immense for us. The number of points he alone won for us over the 4 or 5 years with us was outstanding! Only negative was some of the peculiar hairstyles he chose to sport.

Shaka was so damn cool! Not quite as good as Jamo, but the goalie we needed at the time.

Jamie has really been the ultimate backup for about 7 ish years now, so deserves the number 3. This season has shown that he can be good, but produces way too many errors, more than Jamo!

The only other keeper worth mentioning is begovic, who was good for us but not long enough to warrant a place, imo.

I'd pick Ashdown, Hislop and James as well. But we really should mention Dean Kiely who was a big part of the survival campaign of 2005/2006 season.

Can only agree with everyone's choice of 3 goalkeepers.<ok>

Asmir Begovic does run Jamie Ashdown very close. He is going to be some keeper in years to come, as he is still learning his trade.

    My three would be:

    1. James
    2. Hislop
    3. Ashdown

But i would have to agree with MAJR, Dean Kiely does deserve a mention. He was fantastic in the 2005/06 season and was unlucky to lose his place to David James the next season. Kiely was 35 when he left us but he went onto play for West Brom where he made 72 appearences and won promotion to the premier league. They also got to a Fa-cup semi-final if i remember rightly - Can't remember who beat them though.....

    I would say Ashdown first
    James second
    Shaka third.

Sorry Hoadie-boi - you're nuts if you think Jamie before Jamo. Jamie is doing well and he is the future but Jamo definitely first in my dream team.

Ah man, Chalkias....what a legend! But in all seriousness, he was quality at shot stopping, just not so good at not scoring own goals after said world class stops.

Wasn't it an arsenal freekick where he did an incredible save (maybe tipping it onto a post or two) then boshing the ball in the net donkey-style, somewhat unwittingly! That man was crazy...
